PROCESS OF MAKING PAPER REED.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20, 1919.
Application led May 14, 1917. Serial No. 168,383.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LESLIE F. BARNUM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Making Paper Reed, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a method of manufacturing reeds for basket work or the like from paper strips or ribbons whereby a very compact body is obtained in the article itself and whereby great speed is possible in the making, and to means for carrying out the process.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Figure l is a view in longitudinal section, partially in elevation, of one form of device for carrying out the method, and
Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of the device.
The method consists in mounting a coil of paper ribbon or like sheet material in a suitable holder with the axis of the helix of the ribbon in 3o-incidence with the axis of rotation of the holder and in rotating the holder rapidly while at the same time the inner end of the helix is drawn through a forming opening and between pressure rolls, so that the convolutions passed by the rapid rotation twist the strip into a light, pliant reed. At the same time the ribbon is confined when ,free from the coil within a comparatively small space whereby the high'speed of rotation does not throw it out of line.
As one means of carrying out this process, an elongated spindle 1 is mounted in bearings 2 of a main frame 3 and is driven, as by a suitable pulley 4, at a high speed of rotation. At one end, a hollow head 5 is mounted on or made integral with the sleeve 1 and preferably is connected thereto by a conoidal wall 6. Spring plungers 7 project suitably disposed shoes 8 against a coil 9 of the paper which is inserted in the head. Preferably the bore of the sleeve 1 is tapered slightly and the coil of the ribbon, the inner end portion 10 of which is threaded through the sleeve, is guided not only by the conoidal Wall 6 in the larger end of the bar but the spring shoes 8 which travel in slots 11 of the inner wall 6, maintain the coil in position, and aid in preventing its expanding or becoming ammed.
At the other end of the spindle 1, a detachable head 12 is provided with an opening 13 that determines the size of the twisted paper or reed that issues from the spindle, different heads with different sized openings being used to obtain the desired dimensions in the reeds. The reed is drawn out by a pair of suitable feeding rolls 14 mounted in any preferred manner and driven to effect the purpose.
By ysuch confinement of paper ribbon within the cylinder of small diameter, very high speed is possible and in consequence, the reed may be twisted very hard, while the process of manufacture is much more rapid than the ordinary method.
Obviously changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular arrangement of parts.
What I claim is:
1. Means for producing paper reed comprising a rotatable spindle having a tapered ore, a hollow head on the end of the spindle at the large'end of the bore adapted to carry a coil of paper ribbon and rotate the same on its axis, detachably secured on the outer end to the spindle, a sizing head through which the inner end portion of the strip may be continuously led through the bore of the spindle, a pair of sizing rolls transverse to the spindle for gripping and drawing the strip through the sizing head and preventing its rotation beyond the head, and yielding means for gradually compressing the coil toward its axis as the strip is withdrawn through the head.
2. Means for producing paper reeds comprising a rotatable taper bored spindle, a coil carrying head connected by a conoidal wall to the end of the spindle having the largest diameter of bore, an apertured sizing head detachably secured on the other end of the spindle, and a pair of rolls rotatable on Coil carrying' head for maintaining the coil axes transverse to the spindle adjacent the in proper relation to the spindle axis. 10 sizing head with the point of Contact in co- In testimony whereof I allix my signature incidence with the axis of the spindle, adaptin the presence of two Witnesses.

the spindle, and to prevent the rotation of itnesses: the coil strip as it passes through these rolls, ANNA M. Donn, together with spring pressed means in the C. R. STIGKNEY.
