HAMMER.
rollton, in the county of Pickens and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for operating-a hammer and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for operating a blacksmiths hammer by a foot pedal.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a like view from the op I osite side and showing the hammer in raise position.
In these views 1 indicates the anvil supported by the usual block 2. 3 indicates an upright located a suitable distance from the anvil. To the u per end of this upright is pivoted the han le 4 of the hammer 5. The end of the handle is slightly curved as at 6. A lever 7 is pivoted intermediate its ends to an upright 8 and the front end of this lever extends to a point adjacent the block 2 and the end thereof is provided with a foot pedal 9. The other end of the lever is connected by a link 10 with the handle 4 and .a coil spring 11 has one end connected 'Wlth the link 10 and its other end connected with the lever 7 beyond the upright 8.

in front of the anvil can place his foot on the pedal 9 so as to lower the lever 7. This, through the link 10, will raise the hammer and as soon as the pressure of his foot is removed from the pedal the spring 11 will cause the hammer to strike the anvil with a heavy blow. In this way both hands of the smith are free to manipulate the article being operated upon and the only efi'ort required on the part of the smith is the pressure upon the foot pedal.
A flat recoil spring 12 is secured to the upright 3 and has its upper end provided with a U-bolt for engaging the handle of the hammer and holding it in raised position.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a support, a hammer having its handle pivoted to said support, a lever, means for pivotally supporting the same intermediate its ends, a link connecting one end of said lever with said handle, and extending substantially at right angles to said lever, a foot pedal at the other end of said leverand a coil spring connecting said link with the lever.
2. A device of the class described comprising an anvil, a hammer cooperating therewith, a support to which the end of the hammer handle is pivotally connected, means for oscillating the handle including a foot operated lever and a link connecting the lever to the handle, a fiat recoil spring carried by the support and a U-shaped mem- 'ber carried b said spring for engaging the handle to hold the hammer in raised position.
