TRI-lR-UNNER SLEIGH.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Anomn E. (Iowan, a citizen of the United States, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tri-Runner Sleighs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tri-runner sleigh, and has for its object to provide a sleigh, in a manner as hereinafter setjforth, having a foot operated mechanism for propelling the sleigh when occasion so requires and further having means for shifting the said mechanism clear of the ice or snow to permit of coasting of the sleigh when desired.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a tri-runner sleigh, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eflicient and convenient in its use and inexpensive to manufacture.

l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Figure 1 is an elevation of a tri-runner sleigh in accordance with this invention, and

which illustrates in full lines the propelling mechanism in operative position and in dotted lines in inoperative position.

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the sleigh.

Referring to the drawing in detail the frame machine is formed from a pair of curved bars 1, 2, which are arranged in spaced relation and gradually extend toward each other from their lower to their upper ends.

The bars 1, 2, are curved and near their lower portions are connected together by a brace member 3. The upper ends of the bars 1, 2 are connectedto the steering post 9, below a collar 4.

The bars 1, 2, intermediate their lower and upper ends, have connected therewith, a brace member 5, which constitutes a sup port for a post 6, provided with a seat 7.

Extended down through the collar 4, and

also through the collar 8, is a steering post 9, provided at its upper end with a pair of handle-bars 10.

The lower end of the steering post 9, is forwardly curved as at 11, and provided with a runner 12. To the lower end of each of the bars 1, 2, is attached a runner 13, and which extends in a plane parallel to the run ner l2.

Arranged between the lower end of the steering post and the lower ends of the members 1 and 2, is a propelling mechanism which consists of a pair of bars 14, 15, which extend forwardly and downwardly at an inclination and each of said bars 14, 15, has its rear end pivotally connected as at 16, to a collar 17. The collar 17, is fixed to the bars 1, 2, at a point above the brace member 3.

Each of the bars 14, 15, has its forward end terminating in an axle support 18, in which is mounted a rotatable axle 19, which projects from each of the supports 18, and carries foot pedals 20. Secured to the axle 19, between the supports 18 is a propelling wheel 21, having its rim formed with a radially extending series of spurs or projections 22, adapted to engage in the ice or snow and propel the sleigh when the wheel 21 is revolved.

Projecting forwardly and at a downward inclination from the axle supports 18, are bars 23, which terminate in an arm 24, the latter is pivotally connected as at 25, to the collar 8.

Associated. with the propelling mechanism is a lifting device, which consists of a vertically disposed lifting rod 26, pivotally connected as at 27, to the arm, 24. The rod extends up between the bars 1, 2, and is pivotally connected as at 28, to an operating lever 29, the latter being pivotally connected as at 30, to the collar 4. Arranged between the bars 1, 2, near their upper ends, is a support 31, for a rack 32, the latter extends from the support 31, and is connected to the post 9. The lever 29, has a pivoted dog 33, for the purpose of maintaining it in the position to which it has been adjusted. The lifting device is provided to elevate the propelling mechanism clear of the ice or snow so that one can coast when occasion so requires.

What I claim is:

1. A sleigh comprising a steering post having a runner at its lowerend, a pair of rearwardly extending spaced bars connected therewith and each having its lower end provided with a runner, a seat supported by said bars, a foot operated propelling wheel arranged between said post and bars, a support for said wheel, said support pivotally connected with said bars and slidably and pivotally connected with said post, and a lifting device for elevating said propelling whee 2. A sleigh comprising a steering post having a runner at its lower end, a pair of rearwardly extending spaced bars connected therewith and each having its lower end provided with a runner, a seat supported by said bars, a foot operated propelling wheel arranged between said post and bars, a. support for said wheel, said support pivotally connected with said bars and slidably and pivotally connected with said post, and a lifting device for elevating said propelling wheel, and means for maintaining said propelling wheel in the elevated position.
