Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS J. STEELE, a citizen of the United States, residin at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and tate of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improve ments in hangers, and has relation more particularly to a device of thisgeneral char acter especially designed and adapted for use in connection with swings, hammocks, or other oscillating bodies, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which permits an oscillation of the body, such as a swing, without noise. It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising two relatively movable members one supported by the other and both being in constant interlocking engagement so that the oscillating body, such as a swing, may have its movement with facility and with the substantial elimination of noise which would otherwise result in the event such members were capable of slipping movement one relative to the other.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved hanger whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a hanger constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a coacting support being indicated by dotted lines; and

Fig. 2 is a view partly in edge elevation and partly in section of my improved hanger as herein disclosed.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a shank adapted to be threaded or otherwise secured to a beam or other support and said shank 1 is provided with a flattened head 2 substantially triangular in form. The outer end portion of the head 2 has disposed therethrough an opening .3 having its forward wall straightand said wall is provided with a series of inwardly directed teeth l.

Disposed through the opening dis a block 5 having an edge thereof provided with an arcuate rack 6 meshing with the teeth 4: and whereby said block 5 is capable of rocking movement without slipping.

As clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the block 5 is of a thickness greater than the thickness of the head 2, and the portion of said head 2 below the teeth 4 has its outer faces inwardly beveled as indicated at 7 H denotes a hook member comprising two substantially duplicate parts connected at a point midway their lengths by the bolt 8 and the coacting nut 9. The outer end portions of the parts or sections a are in close contact when said sections or parts a are in operative relation, and the opposite end portion of each of the parts or sections a is outwardly ofiset as at b and saidoffset portion overlies a side face of the block 5.

The overlying extremities of the portions 6 are secured to the block 5 by the bolts 10 disposed through said portions b and the block 5, and coacting with each of the bolts 10 is a clamping bolt 11.

It is to be particularly noted that the opening 3 is of such size that the block 5 can be arranged therein only by movement in a direction laterally of the head 2, and that said opening is also of a size to prevent the rack 6 of the block 5 and the teeth 4 from becoming entirely disengaged so that the proper assemblage of the hanger is assured. This advantageous result is obtained by having the space between the back or upper edge of the block 5 and the corresponding wall of the opening 3 of a width less than the length or pitch of the intermeshing teeth 6 and more particularly when the hanger H is substantially at right anglesto the straight wall defining the opening 3. It is also to be understood that the swinging movement of the hook member H relative to the head 2 in either direction is limited by contact of an end portion of the block 5 with an end wall of the opening 3.

I claim:

A hanger of the class described comprising a member provided With a head, said head having an opening, a Wall of said openinwardly directed from the princi teeth, a block disposed through said open ing and provided with an arcuate rack mcshing With the teeth, said block being of a size less than the size of the opening, the rear 20 edge of the block and the corresponding Wall of the opening being spaced apart a distance less than the length of the teeth of the block, and a hook member having separated parts at an end secured to the side faces of the block.
