Description

E. H. noocx/ ENVELOP.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 13. I918.
Patented May 6, 1919.
5 awe/M02: I H 00 071 Mot/Mu EHIMET'I. H. HOOCK, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSQUBL Y nn'vnnor.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented May 6, 1919.
Application filed September 18, 1918. Serial 170. 253,885.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMMETT H. HOOOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis city and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in envelops and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for covering the return address so that the name of the sender is concealed from view.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and eflicient in operation and one which can be n'ianufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describmg my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a rear view of my improved envelop with the flap closed.
Fig. 2 is a like view with the top and bottom flaps open.
Fig. 3 is a, view showing the bottom flap closed and the upper flap opened.
Fig. 4 shows the envelop closed and with the cover slip removed.
In these views 1' indicates the body of the envelop, 2 the end flaps, 3 the bottom flap and 4: the top flap. As shown, the end flaps have their upper ends square while the free end of the bottom flap is also square so that when the end flaps and bottom flap are secured together they will form a straight edge at the opening of the envelop. I prefer to make the end flaps of the shapes shown with their free ends inclining toward the bottom of the envelop. The upper flap has a detachable part or slip 5 formed thereon by scoring or perforating the. flap as at 6. At one end of the slip I form a slot 7. As shown, the slip is of substantially rectangular form. This slip is adapted to contain the instructions to the post master to tear off the slip when the return address is desired. On the bottom flap I print an outline 8 for receiving the return address. This outline is immediately under the slip when the envelop is closed. I place on the under side of the top flap around the slip adhesive, as indicated at 9.
It will thus be seen that'the senders ad dress is concealed from view from anyone handling the letter; yet his address can be secured by the post master by tearing ofi the slip. This arrangementof parts will act as a reminder to the sender to place his return address on the envelop. It will also give plenty of space on the front of the letter for advertisements or the like.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is An envelop having a space on the outer face of the bottom flap for receiving the address of the sender, and adapted be covered by the closing flap and a shp on the closing flap covering the sa d address and formed bv lines of perforations.
In testimony whereof I afiix my s1 ature. EMMETT H. HO OK.
