SEWING-CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2'9, M1119.
Application filed May 14, 1918. Serial No. 234,443.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS C. BYERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reno, in the county of lVashoe and State of Nevada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sewing cabinets and the principal object of the invention is to provide spool-holding means within the cabinet and means for taking the thread from any desired spool from the exterior of the cabinet.
Another obj ect of the invention is to make the cabinet of attractive appearance by providing the same with transparent portions and also to provide the base of the cabinet with a drawer and the interior thereof with a work-basket provided with a top formed by a pin-cushion.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost. I
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and 1n which Figure 1 is an elevation of the cabinet.
Fig. 2 is a plan view with part of the top broken away to show the interior.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the cutting means.
As shown in these drawings the cabinet consists of a base portion 1 of circular formation around the upper edge of which is located an annular groove 2. This base portion is provided with a recess 3 to receive a shallow drawer 1. This drawer is adapted to receive packages of needles, pins and the like. 5 represents a cylindrical casing hmged to the base and having suitable means for latching it thereto. The lower edge of said casing engages in the groove 2 1n the base.
This casing is preferably made of metal strips provided with upper and lower openings closed by transparent strips of material to provide a series of windows 6 arranged in an upper and lower ring around the casing. The casing is divided by a horizontal partition 7 centrally located into an upper and lower compartment. This partition is provided with a central openin through which passes a receptacle 8 forming a work-basket. This receptacle is of cone shape and extends from adjacent the bottom of the lower compartment through the upper compartment with its upper edge on a line with the top of the casing. 9 indicates the cover for the casing hinged thereto and provided with suitable latching means for holding it in closed position. This cover is provided with a central opening for affording access to the work-basket and this opening is closed by a member 10 made in the form of a pin-cushion. This cushion is suitably hinged to the cover. 11 are pegs projecting upwardly from the base 1 and the partition 7 and arranged in a circle around the worlebasket. These pegs are adapted to receive spools of thread. 12 are eyes carried by the work-basket and located in both compartments. 15 are split tubes connected at their inner ends to the work-basket and having their outer ends connected with the sides of the casing. An opening is provided in the casing which communicates with each tube, two of these tubes being shown in the drawing, one located at the top of the upper compartment and the other at the bottom of the lower compartment. After the spools are placed on the pegs the thread is passed through the eyes 12 and into the split tubes and through the openings in the casing. A sufficient length of thread is permitted to hang down from said openings so that the desired thread may be grasped by the fingers and pulled from the device. 141- indicates a cutter carried by the casing and located between the two openings. This cutter serves the purpose of cutting the thread after sufiicient length thereof has been drawn through the openings. As shown the cutter is formed with comb teeth and a knife 16 is secured to said member with its cutting edge adjacent the teeth.
It will be seen that the cabinet is of an attractive appearance and that the spools of thread may be seen through the windows so that it is not necessary to open the cabinet to see whether or not the spools are empty.
The ends of the threads hang from the thread openings so that the desired thread may be seized by the fingers and a sulficient length thereof pulled from the spool. The thread can then be out by placing the same against the knife carried by the cutting member.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention Will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A sewing cabinet consisting of a circular base, a drawer in said base, a casing of cylindrical shape hinged to said base, acover hinged to said casing, spool supporting means Within the casing, a Work-basket centrally arranged in said casing, and means for withdrawing the thread from the spools through said casing.
2. A sewin cabinet comprising a base, a cylindrical casing hinged thereto, a series of Windows formed in said casing, spool supporting means in said casing, a work basket centrally arranged in said casing, eyes on said Workbasket for receiving the threads from the spools, guiding means for leading the threads from the eyes to the exterior of the casing, a cover hinged to the casing having an opening therein located above the Work-basket, and a second covering closing 35 said opening and hinged to the first cover. In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
