To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK PETRANIGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

This invention relates generally to clamps and, more especially, to a certain new and useful improvement in clamps for awnings and the like, the chief object of my present invention being to provide a simple, inexpensive, easily and quickly manipulated, and efficient clamp particularly adapted for use in connection with awnings and the like for expeditiously and conveniently mounting or securing the awning operatively in position.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in certain novel features of form, construction, arrangement. and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of my new clamp,

Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a clamp embodying my invention, the same being shown in operative position in connection with an awning;

Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same; and

Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of the clamp.

Referring to the said drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, my clamp com-- prises a main or body-member having a central portion 1 approximately flat on its upper or outer face, as at 2. and transversely hollowed out or concaved on its under or inner face to provide a chamber, as at 3, for purposes hereinafter appearing; Integral with, and depending from, portlon 1, is a hook-portion 4 adapted for engagement with the awning, the lower extremity of hook 4 being formed with a neatly reversely rounded lip 5 to prevent tearing or injuring of the fabric or canvas of the awning while engaged by the hook-portion 4. Adapted for cooperation with the main member of the clamp is a second member which includes an upper portion 9 and a lower hook-portion 10, the lower extremity of hook 10 being similarly formed with a rounded lip 11. On its outer or upper face, said upper portion 9 is formed with a boss 12 having preferably a flat outer face, as at 13, the under or rear face of said upper portion 9 being preferably for the greater 7 part obliquely outwardly cut away, as seen particularly in Fig. 2.

adapted to register with said aperture 8, the apertures 8 and 14 being adapted to receive an eye-screw or the like 15 for adjustably securing the second clamping member in cooperative relation with said main member.

In use or operation, said main clampingmember is fixed as described and as shown upon a window frame or the like. A rod or the like 16 forming part of the awning to be mounted is then seated in said hook 4E. The second clamping member is then arranged in operative position with its hook 10 also engaging the rod 16 and its upper portion 9 abutting against the portion 1 of the main member. The screw 15 is then threaded into the registering apertures 8 and 14 and the clamp-members thereby secured together with the awning-rod 16 firmly and rigidly clamped therebetween.

-While so engaged by the clamping-members,

the rounded lips 5 and 11 of the hooks 4 and 10 bear smoothly upon the fabric or canvas of the awning and thereby tearing or injuring of the canvas by the hooks of the clamp is obviated. To remove or dismount the awning, it is only necessary to suitably loosen screw 15, when the second clamping-member, being loose upon the screw-member 15 and having otherwise no engagement with the main clamping-member, will at once swing or move out of clampi'ng engagement with, and thereby permit Said upper portion the ready and convenient removal of, the awning-rod 16, the clamping-members with the screw 15 remainingin operative position upon the window-frame for further and repeated use. By hollowing the main clamp; ing-member, the weight of metal is reduced and at the same time a chamber is provided adjacent the window-frame for the projecting rear end of the adjusting and clampingmember securing screw 15, as seen in Fig. 3.

I am aware that minor changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and con bination of the several parts of my new clamp may be made and substituted for those herein shown and desired without departing from the nature and principle of: my invention. c

Having thus described invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In a clamp for awnings and the like a main member integrally comprising a central portion transversely provided with a screwrseat, a hook-portion depending from the central portion, and perforated ears oppositely projecting laterally from the central portion and adapted to accommodate fastening-screws for the main member, the main member being adapted to be independently positioned flatwise at its rear face Copies of this patent may be obtained for upon, and to be secured by said fasteningscrews to, a window-fran1e or the like, the outer face of said central portion being flat and saidcentral portion having such thick- .ness relatively to the thickness of said ears member being adapted for cooperation with the main member, and a headed screw-memberfitting loosely through the aperture of the second member and threadedly into'said seat of the main member for securing the second and main members in clamping engagement with the awning, the second member moving out of such clamping engagement and permitting removal of th awning on only loosening the threaded engagement of said screw-member with said main memher.
