To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RoBu'R'r S. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification. V

This invention relates to ventilators and has particular reference to that class of ventilators adapted to be used in connection with toilet fixtures.

An important object of the invention is to provide a means whereby foul odors may be readily ejected from a closet-bowl of a water closet or toilet room.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which may be readily installed in connection with certain toilet fixtures without necessarily altering or changing the structure thereof;

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is strong, durable, reliable in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred orm of my invention the numeral 5 indicates a closet-bowl provided with a flush pipe 6 and a seat 7 Within the seat 7 at the rear end thereof there is arranged a tube 8 having a funnel-shaped end 9.

At a remote location from the closet-bowl 5 there is arranged a container 10 which is secured preferably to the wall, not shown, of a toilet room or water closet in proximity to a. window thereof, the window being indicated as a whole by the numeral 11. Within the container 10 there is arranged a pair of cells 12 which are connected in circuit by means of conductors 13 with an electric motor 14:, the electric motor being provided with a fan 15. The electric motor 14.- is arranged within a casing 16, which is tapered at each end thereof as shown at 16, the tapered ends being projected through openings 17 provided by the'casing.

To the upper end of the casing 16 there is connected a hose or pipe 18 or the like which is extended through the frame of the window 11 as shown at 19. To the lower end of the casing 16 there is secured a second hose or pipe 20 which in turn is detachably connected to the tube 8 as shown at 21.

In proximity to the closet-bowl 5there is arranged a circuit closer 22 which is connected in circuit with the cells 12 by means of conductors 23.

In use, the operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to eject foul odors from the closet-bowl 5 the circuit closer 22 is closed thereby completing an electric circuit through the cells 12 and the electric motor 14 by means of conductors 13 and 23. Upon the completion of the electric circuit the fan 15 is rotated in such a direction as will tend to create a partial vacuum within the hose or pipe 20, thereby removing from the closet-bowl 5 any foul odors therein, said foul odors being transmitted into the casing 16 and ejected therefrom into the open air out of doors through the hose or pipe 18.

t is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, character, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
