WILLIAM LEE, O'F GA LVESTON, TEXAS.
To allwlwm it may concern:
I, WILLIAM LEE, a citi- States, residing at Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Shade-Operating Levers, of which the following is a specification.
The, object of the invention is to provide a simple, relativelyinexpensive and eiiicient means for-12o 'erating window shades, particularlylinl-theraising and lowering of the same, without involving the necessity of usin thespring roller which is now commo y employed and which involves the necessity of manipulating the shade by means of a cord or to the lower edge ofthe shade proper, and with these, objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully explained, it being Be, it known that understood that changes in the form, proportion and details may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim rwithout'departing from the spirit of the principles involved.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front view of a shade as apits roller mounting and means for- Ioperating the same in accordance with ,theiinvention. v a
Fig. 2 is a detailv'iew partly in section of one of the operating means.
Fig. 3 is a side view partly in section of the same. I
..Figs. {1 and 5 are detail views in perspective of the brackets employed respectively for opposite ends of the shade roller.
Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the terminal spindles of the shade roller.
The shade 10 is carried by the usual roller 12 mounted in bearin 13 and 14 ormed respectively in the re atively inverted double brackets 15 and 16 supported by suitable bases 17 or the equivalent thereof.
Arran ed conveniently within the brack ets are t of which the rotary armatures 19 are secured to the said roller spindles, the latter being held in pro er relation to their bearings by bearing 'sks or washers'20 so as to properly posltion the armatures with reference to the ma ets.-
Push buttons 1 and 22 are conveniently Specification of Letters Patent.

located upon the window casing 23 and are -respectively connected by wiring 24 through batteries indicated diagrammaticall at 25 with the windin respectively of said magnets so that upon 0 osing one or the other ofthe switches by actuating a push button,- the correspondin magnet is energized to cause rotation o the armature related therewith, and as said armatures and magnets are oppositely positioned at opposite ends of the roll, either a downward or an upward movement of the shade is the result, such movement continuing as long as the circuit is held closed.
bviously the push button may be arranged upon the same side of the casing instead of at opposite sides-thereof as shown, and in either case a convenient operating mechanism is provided in that the shade may be turned either upward or downward to the desired extent without eflort upon the part of the operator and without strain upon the shade and also without the risk of dlsalining the shade with reference to the window casing as is frequent] the resultwhen the movement of the sha e is dependent upon strain applied directly to the shade as when the ordinary Hartshorn roller is em loyed.
t will be noted moreover, that the attachment may readily be mounted upon'a window casing, all of the parts thereof including the brackets being carried by the common element vconsisting of the base, and owing to the double or two armed construction of the bracket, a double bearing is provided for each roller spindle said bearings being arranged as indicated upon either side of the armature so that any tendency to strain in o ration is avoided.
Having tifscribed the invention I claim:
A shade roller operating mechanism having roller carried spindles, a monocoil motor arranged at each.end of said roller, said motors including U-shaped brackets reversely disposed relativel the magnets of said motors being carried y the cros pieces of the brackets, and the armatures secured to said spindles and operatin between the limbs of said brackets, switc es in circuit with the windings of said magnets, and a source of electrical ener WILLIAM LEE.
