RAILWAY-CROSSOVER.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. EMERY, citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Crossovers, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has to do with railway cross-overs.
It has for its general object to provide, in a railway cross-over, a bridge, flush ata'll points with the bottoms of the channels in the cross-over, and hence adapted to aflord a surface'for the travel of wheel flanges during the passage of the wheels across the flange spaces between the proximate ends of the cross-over portions on which the treads of the wheels bear, this with a view to averting the wheel treads dropping in the said spaces and giving rise to the objectionable pounding which is detrimental to the crossover and the wheels and subjects car passengers to great discomfort. According to my invention the upper side or surface of the bridge is at places in parallelism with the cross-over surfaces on which bear the treads of the wheels, with. the result that incidental to the traverse of the cross-over the wheels are supported by engagement with the wheel flanges and treads except when the mentioned spaces are encountered,
corresponding parts in all the views of the when the wheels will be supported by engagement with their flanges, alone, though the relative arrangement is such that the crossing of the flange spacesis negotiated without dropping or raising of the wheels and consequently without any bumping or excessive wear at the points adjacent to the said spaces.
The invention also contemplates the provision of a bridge arranged to receive all of the wear at and adjacent to the spacecrossing point, and adapted to be expeditiously removed and as readily replaced with a new bridge when occasion demands, thereby obviating the necessity of installing an entirely new cross-over which entails considerable expense and loss of time.
The invention further contemplates the adaptation of cross-overs such as are at pres ent in use or in stock for use in conjunction with my novel and advantageous bridge.

or other connecting devices may beem-ployed to secure my novel bridge in its stationary relation to the cross-over, without departure from the scope and principle of my claimed invention, though I would have it here understood that one feature of my. resent invention resides. in the capacity .of the peculiar bridge by cooperation-with the seat in the cross-over to retain itself in position without liability of casual movement ordis placement.
With the foregoing in mind, the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereby made apart hereof, in which: i

The bottom wall 7 of the seat 5 is parallel to the bottom walls 3 0f the channels 2, and the end walls of the seat are preferably, though not necessarily, perpendicular :to the bottom Wall 7 and rounded or concaved horizontally as illustrated. By virtue of this the bridge is enabled to retain itself in position and against casual shifting or displacement without the employment of extraneous devicessuchns bolts, though it isto be under stood that, without affecting my invention,
suchdevices may be employed regarded of advantage.
Notwithstanding the capacity .of the bridge'6 to-hold itself against casual shift- .ing or displacement, it will be noted that the bridge rmay .be areadily removed .when worn and. replaced with a new bridge, thereby at comparatively 5 small expense prolonging the usefulness of the cross-over .as a
' mayfbe -rea'dily replaced withza new bridge at small expense and without interfering with traflic.
Having described :my invention, what I claim and'desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a railway cross-over, the combination with a cross-over body having interse'cting channels at angles to each other, with the bottom walls of the channels parallel to the upper sides of the tread portions and flange-spaces between said tread por- "tions, and also having a cruciform seat in ;the bottom walls .of the channels, the end walls of said seat being perpendicular to the bottom wall thereof and concavehorr ,zontal-ly; of abridge, of cruciform configuration and. s1ze eto'snugly occupy the seat 1n the cross-over body, disposed in said seat,
with .its upper side throughout :flush with theibott'om walls of the channels; and parallel to the :upper sides=of the :tread portions of the body.
2.
