Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Application filed December 14, 1917. Serial No. 207,051.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. Sonnn- DEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to containers, and is especially applicable to that class comprising an exterior sheet metal envelop and an interior foldable carton fitted to be contained within the outer can or envelop, and especially employed for the reception of crackers or biscuits.
It consists in the formation of a rectangular can or case of sheet metal, having an inwardly turned flange around the top and a flanged cover with one edge of the cover flange hinged to the side of the case sufficiently below the top to allow the cover flanges to extend down and inclose the top of the case when closed. The carton is made of stiff paper, pasteboard, or the like, and of such smaller size than the interior of the case as to be inserted between the rim flanges of the case which serve as a guide to retain the carton out of contact with the sides of the case.
The carton filling opening is made in one of the vertical sides inclosed within the case, score marks indicating the part to be out out for the removal of the crackers from the top.
Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure tainer.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, the carton b ing shown in side elevation.
A is a case of sheet metal, rectangular in form, having a cover B hinged to one side and with sufiiciently deep lips or flanges to be turned down to inclose the top when closed.
The top of the case has an inwardly turned flange 2 extending all the way around it, and the carton 3, made of stiff pasteboard, is of such a size as to fit within and be supported out of contact with the sides of the can by this flange. This forms an annular air space around the sides of the 1 is a perspective view of the con- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the carton which prevents moisture and which also prevents the carton from being compressed and the contents being broken by compression of the sides of the case during transportation. In order to conveniently fill the cartons, foldable, interlocking flaps 4 are formed on one of the sides which is closed and protected by the side of the case, and when the contents are to be removed, the top may be removed by cutting on the lines 5 which are scored on the exposed top of the carton.
By inclosing the carton in an outer metal case with surrounding intervening space, the carton and its contents are protected from breakage or injury, and also from injurious atmospheric conditions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A container for cartons of the type discarded after being emptied composed of a metal case having its upper end bent to form a continuous and uninterrupted inwardly extending flange which projects within the interior of the case throughout the top thereof, a paper carton insertible in the case and having its bottom seated on the bottom of the metal case and having its upper end projecting above and engaged with the flange of the case so as to be held with its periphery spaced from the inner face of the case whereby to provide an air space between the case and carton and to prevent crushing of the carton sides by the case sides and a cover for the case formed to receive and engage over the said projecting upper end of the carton, said carton having a filling opening in a side thereof lying opposite to a side of the metal case and having its top provided with scored portions so as to provide an inlet to enable access to the carton contents from points at the top of the carton.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM E. SCHENDEL.
