To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. CARROLL, a citizen of the United States, and a'resident of Norfolk, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Card-Index, of wh1ch the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved card index arranged to render visible the names, titles or other legends on cards, record cards, index cards, ledger leaves and other printed or written sheets, without requiring separating or fingering the cards, leaves or sheets asnow generally practised. Another ob ect 1s to provide a sectional support for the card,

carriers, the sections being detachably connected with each other one above the other to support the cards in overlying relatlon and with the lower name or title portions of the cards exposed to permit of reading the names, titles or other legends without disturbing the position of any one of the cards. Another object is to permit of coupling any desired number of sections together to form a unitary support or leaf to be hung up singly or with others or to be mounted in loose leaf binders or to be arranged in the form of an endless belt, 1f

With these and other ob ects in mow, the

invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, m which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

of superimposed sheets with a carbon paper intermediate the same.

The support 10 is made of a number of sections 15, each in the-form of a narrow strip of sheet material provided at the upper and lower edges with interlocking joint mem bers 16 and 17, of which the joint member 16 of one section 15 detachably engages the joint member 17 of the next following section' 15. It is understood that the sections 15 are coupled together by sliding the adjacent locking members 16 and 17 sidewise into engagement with each other. By the arrangement described any number of sections 15 can be coupled together or any one of the sections can be detached and the adjacent sections coupled together whenever it is desired to do so.

The card carrier or holder 11 is preferably made from sheet material and its upper edge is provided with hinge eyes 20 engaged by pintles 21 having return bent hooks 22 extending through apertures 23 formed 1n the corresponding section 15 of the support 10 so as to hingedly connect a card carrier with a corresponding section 15. The hinge connection permits of swinging the card carrier up or down. The card carrier 11 is provided at the sides with return bent lugs 25 adapted to be engaged by slots 26 formed in the sides of a card 12 to detachably fasten the card 12-to the corresponding card carrier 11. Each of the cards 12 is provided at its lower portion 27 with the name, title or other identification legend.

In practice the cards 12 are of the same size and are somewhat less in width than the support 10, and the card carriers 11 are preferably somewhat less in width than the cards 12. By reference to Fig. 1 it will be noticed that the cards normally overlie one the other with the lower portions 27, however, exposed to permit convenient reading of the name, title or other identification legend without fingering the cards.

The sides of each section 15 are provided with apertures 30 located beyond the sides of the corresponding cards 12, and the apertures 30 are adapted to be connected with the rings of a loose leaf binder and with a supporting member 40 adapted to be hung on a hook 41 or the like, as indicated in Fig. 1. It will be noticed that any one of section l or detaching the latterv from the remaining sections of the support 10. In this case the empty card carrier 11 indicates that its card is missing. As previously stated, any one of the sections 15 can be disconnected from the remaining sections of the support and with this removed section is carried along its card carrier 11 and the card 12 mounted on the carrier.

It will be noticed that the card index shown and described is exceedingly simple and durable in construction and its individual members can be readily detached or interchanged as desired by the user.

Although I have shown the preferred forms of the members of the card index, it is evident that I do not limit myself to the detail construction of the same assuch construction may be varied without deviating from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters I Patent 1'. A card index, comprising a support made in sections detachably coupled together along adjacent edges, and card carriers, one for each section and mounted to swing thereon, each card carrler having card attachincr means for engagement with a card to hol d the latter in place, succes sive cards overlying each other with the name or title portions exposed.

A card index, comprising a support made in sections arranged one above the other, the top and bottom edges of each section having interlocking joint members to detachably couple the sections together, card carriers one for each section and each having at the sides attaching lugs, a card for each carrier and provided at the sides near the top edge with slots for the passage of the said lugs to hold the card in place on the carrier, each. card having its lower portion provided with a legend, and a hinge connecting the upper edge of each card carrier withthe corresponding section to allow of swinging the carrier and its card up or down, the cards being approximately of the same size and overlying each v other with the lower legend portions exposed.

5. A card index, comprising a support made in sections arranged one above the other, the top and bottom edges of each section having interlocking joint members to detachably couple the sections together, card carriers one for each section and each having at the sides attaching lugs, a card for each carrier and provided at the sides near the top edge with slots for the passage of the said lugs to hold the card in place on the carrier, each card having its lower portion provided with a legend, and a hinge connecting the upper edge of each card carrier with the corresponding section to allow of swinging the carrier and its card up or down, the cards being approximately of the same size and overlying each other with the lower legend portions exposed, the card carriers being of a less width than the cards and the latter being of less width than the sec.- tions, the projecting sides of the latter being provided with means for attaching the support to a holdin device.
