Description

. irren srn'rns Farm orricr..
CHARLES VOLTZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF T0 SAMUEL B.
COCHRAN E, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
METAL BARREL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11., 1919.
Application led August 14, 1917. Serial No. 186,157.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES VoL'rz, a citizen of 'the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Barrels, of-
. which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to metal barrels'or containers especially designed for the shlpment or storage of powders, plasters, soda ash, rubber cernents, heavy oils, greases, and the like, and has for its object to provide ya straight walled container from' which the hardened contents may be dumped in bulk and which is proof against leakage and evaporation. t
A special object is to provide an improved y closure or head for such containers, and
means for locking said closure or head. on the container so as to seal the same. without employing obstructions in the container which would prevent the contents thereof from being dumped in bulk. Other objects will appear as the' description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter de scribed in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this speciflcation, and then more specifically dened in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to desf ignate corresponding parts throughout the several views:-
Fi re 1l is a top plan view of the container with the head fastened thereon.
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the upper portion of the container with the head or cover in place, the spanner wrench being also shown as used for tightening up the nut for holding said head in position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the head. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the upper portion of the container.
Fig. 5 is a detailed under plan view of.
the locking bar lis engaged with the ribs on the container.
v line with said spaces, so
The barrel or container l has formed or pressed invits end portion a pair of spaced or sectional and partially encircling ribs or beads 2, and at its extreme end or mouth said container is tted with a rounded metal chime 3 welded or otherwise permanently secured thereto. The head or cover comprises a sheet metal disk 4 .having a peripheral groove 5 containing packing 6 adapted vto fit upon the chime 3. Said disk 4 is reinforced by aA cast metal spider 7 having a socket 8 in the center and a perforation 9 at the center` of said socket. `The diskhas a perforation 10 registering with the perforation v9 for the passage of` a screw threaded stud 11 on the upper end of which a nut 12 may be screwed, said nut fitting the socket 8 and having cavities or perforations 13 to receive the lugs 14 of a Spanner wrench 15.
by means of which said nut is rotated on the stud 11. 4
t A locking bar 16, preferably made in truss form as illustrated in'Figs. 2, 5 and 6,
is adapted to engage the lower edge of the wise down into the container 1n order to.
avoid the chime 3, and after being turned to horizontal position, said bar is brought up through the spaces between the ribs 2, as
- illustratedin Fi 9, until the ends of the barenga e the c 'me 3, asin Fig. 2. The
cover or ead is then put on with the upper end ofthe stud 11 projecting uthrough the openings 10 'and 9 into the soc et or cavity 8, and the nut 12 applied to said stud and tightened up by the Spanner wrench. ,The
head or cover is thus firmly clamped on the chime without strain on the walls of the i container. being passed through the spaces between the sectlonal ribs 2, the locking-bar 'is turned to bringl its ends out of t at the ribs will prevent the bar from dropping back into Y thecontainer while the cover or head is being fastened on or taken oli". The spider is fastenedto the sheet metal cover in any suitable manner, as by the rivets 20. The outer surface of the spider aroundthe socket 8 maybe flush Vwith vthe Voutch-surface fof the Y' grooved eriphex'y-ofzthecoversofthatfthe Vf barrel w Y i l A enH the container isused'f-foholdig .a liquid, a gasket 21 maybe placedaroundlthef 'A stud 11 between thejlocknutv-ISvandi-the inner*- `surface of the 1 cover tonjpreventfjleevlggge through the perforationsf-9 and'f-lfaifound u 'the stud. While the studiill is shownlas v adjustably mounted o`n the bal-'16, it may be made integral-therewith `if desired. A" -v -Having thus described my invention, what I I' claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The combinationwith acontainer having sectional ribs near its mouth, of a. continuous encircling abutmentfarljanged at the mouth of -thecontainer .andspacedvfrom .the sectional ribs, a, lockingv bar adapted to 'heitrioroff the container and engage=f--thebtmentfter being passed beeenfsalidvsectiongylribs, acover, and m carried fby said-bar 'for'lockingihe cover in :,combinaltionfwith a container and hevingge perforation', ofa,- continu- 4 I fclirig.;l abutment2- at "the mouth of ntainei, ".l 'locking barl .to span Ythe .injtei'ior .ofthe l'contiierend engage the y lower vedge ofthe abutment, sectional ribs n the walls of r'the .container below said bar for lthe purpose specified, and `asi-lud carried Aby the yberend extending up through the yperforation-win the cover for locking the same in place.
'testimony whereof Iv have signed my name to this' specification.
