V RECEPTAGLE FOR BLACKING, TOOTH-PASTE, AND LIKE PLASTIC MATERIALS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application filed March 27, 1918. Serial No. 225,075.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY JAMES BRAsHrER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles for Blacking, Tooth- Paste, and like plastic Materials, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class ofv receptacle for plastic materials such as blacking, toothpaste, ointment or the like which has a container, (hereinafter also called a lid) provided with a piston for ejecting the plastic material through an orifice in the upper part of the container. This class of receptacle is objectionable and has hitherto had little or no commercial value, owing to the leakage of material between the piston and container, no means having been provided to trap any material which has so escaped through such leakage. Any leakage of this kind also is detrimental to plastic materials such as blacking, ointment or the like owing to the rapidity'with which oily or other plastic ingredients vaporize, resulting in drying and hardening of the compounds before they can be used.
The dilficulty is overcome according to the invention which consists in a receptacle of the kind referred to comprising a box having a central piston portion in spaced relation to the side of the box, forming therewith an annular pocket, and a slotted lid the side of which engages within and fits the side of the box and enters the aforesaid pocket. Any material leaking between the lid and piston is retained within this pocket. An auxiliary lid fitting over the slotted lid further seals and protects the contents.
In one form a packing disk of cardboard or like material is inserted within the slotted lid so that such disk rests on and is operated (on pressure being used) by the piston, and suitable means are provided to hold the disk in the lid even when uneven pressure is applied to the lid tending to tilt the disk.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of a container or receptacle according to the invention.
Fig. 2 being a perspective view of an auxiliary lid therefor.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same container and the auxiliary lid in position thereon.
Fig. 4 is a plan of the container with the auxiliary lid removed.
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of a slightly modified form of container.
Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation of a further form in which a packing disk is used.
Fig. 7 being an inverted plan of the lid with the disk in position showing the lugs for holding the disk.
Fig. 8 is a sectional elevation of a still further form.
In all the figures similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts.
In the form of the invention illustrated by Figs. 1 to 4:, a cylindrical box has a vertical side 1. Inside the box an inverted cup 2 forms an internal upstanding piston portion in spaced relation to the side 1 of the box so as to form therewith an annular pocket 3. The side 1 projects above the top 4 of the piston portion 2. A lid provided with a central slot 6 for the ejection of the contents of the box has a side 7 engaging within and fitting the side 1 of the box. It also fits the side of the piston portion 2. The lid 5 has a circular rim or beading 8 surrounding the slot '6, thereby forming a convenient finger basin for the ejected portion of the contents of the lid or container. When the contents are to be ejected the operatorcan either take the box in his hands or rest it upon some surface such as a table and press the lid farther into the box and the piston will then force the contents through the slot. Practically the whole of the contents may be thus ejected so that there is a minimum of waste. An auxiliary lid 9 fits over the lid 5 and prevents evaporation of oily or other matter in the contents through the slot 6.
In the form shown in Fig. 5 the lid 5 is provided with a depression or basin 10 in which the slot 6 is formed. A corresponding depression 21 is formed in the top 4 of the piston portion 2. p
In the forms shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the lid 5 is fitted with a packing disk 11 of cardboard or like material, the lid 5 having lugs 12 for holding the disk in position and preventing it from tilting should an uneven pressure be applied to the lid, 5. The piston portion 2 is shown in Fig. 6 pressed up from the same piece of material as the side 1 of the box. To allow for the descent of the lugs 12 when the contents are being ejected (see Fig. 8) the annular pocket 3 is of suit-- able width. In 'Fig. 8 the piston 2 is shown as a separate cup merely loosely inserted or soldered or otherwise secured to the bottom 13 of the box. The piston or cup 2 has a flange 15 which fits against the side 1 of the box and centralizes the cup or piston.
In order still further to prevent evaporation of the contents before use a thin sheet of metal foil 14, Fig. 6, is laid against the inside of the top of the lid 5. The portion of the foil} beneath the slot 6 is pierced or scraped away by a knife when the contents are to be used. With a box or receptacle according to the invention plastic materials containing oily or other matters can be packed and retained in a plastic state for long periods. Moreover the contents can be used without soiling or mess and without any appreciable waste.
I claim 1. A receptacle for plastic material comprising a box having a central piston portion in spaced relation to the side of the box forming therewith. an annular pocket, and an apertured lid for containing the plastic material placed over such central piston por tion the side of which lid engages within and fits the side of the box and during the whole period of use in the extrusion of the contents thereof enters the aforesaid pocket.
2. AZ receptacle for plastic material comprising a box having a central piston portion in spaced relation to the side of the box form ing therewith an annular pocket and an apertured lid for containing the plastic material placed over such central piston portion the side of which lid engages within and fits the side of the box and during the whole period of use in the extrusion of the contents thereof enters the aforesaid pocket and an auxiliary lid adapted to fit overthe aforesaid slotted lid, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
3. A receptacle for plastic material comprising a box having a central piston portion in spaced relation to the side of the box forming therewith an annular pocket, and an apertured lid for containing the plastic material placed over such central piston portion the side of which lid engages within and fits the side of the box and during the whole period of use in the extrusion of the contents thereof enters the aforesaid pocket,- and a cardboard disk above said piston portion and fitting inside said lid, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
4. A receptacle for plastic material coniprising a box having a central piston por tion in spaced relation to the side of the box forming therewith an annular pocket, and an apertured lid placed over such central piston portion the side of which lid engages within and fits the side of the box and enters the aforesaid pocket, and a cardboard disk above said piston portion and fitting inside .said lid which'is provided with lugs to hold said disk, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
5. A receptacle for plastic material com prising abox having a central piston portion in spaced relation to the side of the box forming therewith an annular pocket, and an apertured lid placed over such central piston portion the side of which lid engages within and fits the side of the box and enters the aforesaid pocket, and a cardboard disk above said piston portion and fitting inside said lid which is provided with lugs to hold said disk, and an auxiliary lid adapted to fit over the aforesaid slotted lid, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbe fore set forth. 4
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. HENRY JAMES BRASHIER.
