Description

A.]J'.'RUTLE'DGE.
Back-Ba nd s' for Harness.
Patented July 16, 1872,
wltmssu;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM J. RUTLEDGE, OF JEFFERSON PARISH, LOUISIANA.
IMPR OVEMENT IN BASIC-BANDS FOR HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,498, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, ABRAHAM J. RUTLEDGE, of the parish of Jefferson and State of Louisiana, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Back-Band for Draft Animals; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification.
My improvement relates to a very simple form of back-band, which is designed for draft animals employed for general work on farms or plantations, or for other purposes where a cheap, durable, and substantial back-band may be exceedingly desirable. It is constructed of wood or metal, in two pieces, constituting the two side straps, the upper extremities of which are connected together by a short leather or rubber strap. The formation of the side strap is such as to conform to the peculiar outline or shape of the back of the draft animal upon which it is to be employed, to the end of avoiding contact with the extreme top of the back of the said animal, and thereby to prevent by any possibility the saddle from chafing or galling the animal to which it may be applied.
My improvement will at once be readily understood by reference to the drawing, whereon it is shown in perspective as complete and ready to be attached to the belly-band of any harness to which it may be attached.
A shows thetwo wooden ormetalside straps, and B the leather or other flexible strap connecting the two upper extremities of the said side straps A. C shows perforations made in the lower extremities of the said side straps, into which may be inserted leather or other suitable strings or straps, to the end of connecting thereby the belly-band with the side straps A, aforesaid.
I have demonstrated by repeated experiments the utility of my invention, and having described it, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is the following:
Claim.
The back-band herein described, when composed of the wooden or metal side straps A, constructed of the contour or shape shown, and when the said side straps A are connected together by the strap 13, substantially as described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
@ A. J. RUTLEDGE.
