Application filed April 30, 1917, Serial No. 165,519. Renewed December 21, 1918. SerialNo. 267,880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WELLINGTON SALT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New 5 York, have invented certain useful Improvements in Valve Structures, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to a pressure reducing valve structure, and more particularly to the class of gas pressure reducers.
The primary object of the inventionis the provision of a pressure reducing valve structure of this character wherein the gas will be maintained at the same pressure through the meter without regard to the location thereof relative to the point of supply of the gas thereto.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a valve structure of this character wherein the same can be adjusted so as to regulate the pressure of gas from the supply to the meter.
further object of the invention is the provision of a valve structure of this character wherein the same is novel in form to assure the automatic action thereof and to avoid any possibility of tampering therewith without detection.
A. still further object of the invention is the provision of a valve structure of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eificient in operation, strong, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.
Uther objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth. W
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claim.
n in the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a vertical sectional View through a pressure reducing valve constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 e of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 des- 5 ignates the valve body which, at the side 6 thereohis formed with an inlet nipple 1i mg with the and united in any while the opposite side is open and the body is formed with suitable external threads at this open side for the detachable connection thereto of a removable cap 8 which is formed withaninternal annular shoulder 9 coactedge of the body 5 for the mounting of a flexible diaphragm 10 interiorly of the body, the cap at itsen'gaging end with the body 5 being fitted with a lock or set screw 11 which fasand the head tens the cap upon the body, of this screw is normally covered with a wax or other seal 12 which enables one to determine Whether or not the valve has been tampered with, as when the seal 12 is broken it will afiord a means of detection that an unscrupulous person has endeavored to 1{gain access to the interior of the valve.
ormed on a gas supply is an outlet nipple 13 which is connected with a gas meter in any suitable manner.
At the point of juncture of the inlet nipple 7 with the sides 6 of the valve body 5 is an inlet opening 14 having concentrically there of a raised valve seat 15 with which is adapted to engage a disk valve 16 formed with a stem 17 working through the opening 14: Suitable manner to the diaphragm 10 centrally thereof, the stem 17 at the right hand side of the diaphragm 1O eing formed with a reduced end 18 which slidably fits within a guide bore 19 formed centrally in the wrench-engaging boss portion Q0 of the cap 8, while surrounding this end 18 is a coiled expansion spring 21 which has one end working against the cap and its opposite end against an adjustable nut 22 threaded on the reduced end 18 of the stem 17 so that the tension of the spring 21 can be varied for regulating the action of the valve and the required pressure upon the diaphragm 10 for the automatic closing the valve to neduce the pressure of fluid in the valve structure.
Normally, the valve 16 is open and remains in this position under a determined amount of gas pressure and should the pres sure rise it will act upon the diaphragm 10 against the resistance of the spring 21 so as to automatically actuate the valve 16 to regulate the pressure of gas through the valve to the gas meter from the gas main.
The valve 16 and stem 1? are formed with open side of the lld , the eon'struetion and ,15 when the valve is closed.
radial guide wings 23 which work within the opening 1 and sustain the valve centered for the proper seating thereof upon the seat its periphery, a flexible diaphragm within the body and secured in place between the annular shoulder and the edge of the open 1 side, a valve for closing the inlet opening, a valve stem secured to the diaphragm at the center of the latter and connecting with the valve, the valve and valve stem being formed with radial guide wings slidably engaging the inlet opening, the cap being formed at its center and on the interior with a guide bore in whioh one end of the valve stem slidably moves, the valve stem at this end being threaded, a nut carried on the threaded portion of the stem, and a spiral spring in surrounding relation to the threaded portion and compressed between the cap From the foregoing description taken in conne ion h t e accompanying drawing, operation of the herein described valve Qstruoture will be readily apparent and, therefore, a more extende expl nat o a tee m te Having thus described my invention, o eim A valve of the. character set forth comprismg e dy hene a p side, a p ng g ng t e open e and fermed'wiith inturned annular shoulder,
$1 6 190d being'of Circular formation and and the nut. provlde A on its closed side with a center in- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. lot and provided with an outlet on v -LLINGTON SALT.
