YOSHIUJI TAJIMA, OF HIGASHINARI-GUN, OSAKA-FIT, JAPAN.
WATER-GAGE.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
Application filed June 20, 1918. Serial No. 241,031.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YOSHIUJI TAJIMA, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, and a resident of No. 286 Tennoji, Tennoji-Mura, Higashinari- Gun, Osaka Fu, Empire of Japan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lVater-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water gages for boilers, which, by reason of special construction of the plug which is hollow and pro vided with an opening and closing pipe therein, is adapted not only for facilitating the cleaning of the gage tube but also for directly converting it to a test cock immediately upon the breakage of the glass tube.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and more readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings upon which is shown in sectional elevation two plug boxes to which the ends of the gage tube are attached, according to the invention.
In a convenient embodiment of the present invention such as is illustrated by the drawing, each of the plug boxes 1 and 1 which joins hermetically both ends of the gage tube 2 is mounted in an ordinary manner upon the end plate of the boiler, shown in dotted lines.
The present invention is an improvement upon the saidordinary water gages, and consists in providing an inclosed hollow space 6 in the interior of that part of the body of the plug forming connections with the gage tube 2, besides further providing an opening and closing pipe 5 centrally disposed within the said hollow space and at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the plug, the diametrically extending ends of which pipe 5 being opened to and flush with the outer peripheral surface of the body of the plug 3. Preferably this opening and closing pipe 5 may be cast integral with the body of the plug.
Like other devices the inner end of the plug is rotatably provided with a suitable cleaning member 4:, so that, by turning it with the plug the lime matter that clogs the flow of the fluid may be removed.
Other features such as providing at upper and lower ends the blow off opening 7 leading to the atmosphere is the same as the usual device of this nature.
The operation is obvious that by turning both upper and lower plugs 3 and 3, until the opening and closing pipes 5, 5, assume the position substantially horizontal with respect to the vertical axis of the gage tube 2, that is, by bringing both pipes 5 and 5 t0 the position illustrated by the upper plug so as to place the gage tube 2 in communication with the interior of the boiler, the actual depth of the water in the boiler will be ascertained by translating it into the corresponding height of the water in the gage tube.
By turning both upper and lower plugs 3 and 3, until the opening and closing pipe 5 and 5 assume a position of substantial alinement with respect to the vertical axis of the gage tube, that is, by bringing both opening and closing pipe 5 and 5 to the position illustrated by the lower plug so the gage tube is entirely isolated from the interior of the boiler with the exception of being opened at both ends to the atmosphere so that the blow oif 7, opening and closing pipe 5 and gage tube 2 are placed in the same vertical alinement, which position enables the tube to be cleaned out by suitable means as soon as the gage-tube looks obscured. The cleaning may be also effected in automatical manner by allowing the hot water to blow out through the upper opening. This can be done by placing the upper plug in position communicating with the atmosphere and the lower plug in position communicating with the interior of the boiler. Further, by suitable manipulation the invention may be utilized as a test cock, thus saving all such work and cost as are necessary when a boiler is specially equipped with a test cock.
Having thus described my invention, what plug andadapted to communicate with or I claim is be isolated from the interior of the gage A water gage valve comprising a plug havglass, substantially as set forth. ing a hollow space therein, said hollow space In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 5 having one opening communicating with in presence of twowitnesses. the boiler and another opening adapted to be brought into communication with the YOSHIUJI TAJIMA' gage glass, an opening and closing pipe Witnesses: V disposed across the said hollow space at W.EB1HARAH, 10 right angles to the longitudinal axis of the T. SAKAI.
