OVERALLS.
Specification'of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
Application filed April 18, 1918. Serial No. 229,363.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW W. CARLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in overalls, and is designed to provide such garments or wearing apparel with auxiliary patches or protectors for the knees that .will prevent the overalls from wearing out or wearing through at this point, thus prolonging the life of the garment, and economizing in favor of the wearer, and at the same time providing for the renewal of worn parts so that the appearance of the garment may at all times be kept up to a favorable workmanlike standard.
The invention consists essentially in providing the legs of the overalls or bifurcated garment with overhanging hems, at their front portions and attaching thereto specially prepared patches, as will be herein after more fully pointed out and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings one complete example and two modified forms thereof are illustrated, showing the best modes so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention.
Figure 1 illustrates the overalls made according to this invention, and in use.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a patch..
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail view, showing the patch laced to the hem.
Fig. 4 illustrates the patch attached to the hem by a glove fastener or snap fastener.
Fig. 5 illustrates a modified form of hem.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the drawings I have utilized the usual or standard form of overalls of the bifurcated type comprising the body or waist portion 1 and apron 2, and the shoulder straps 3, 3, passing over the shoulders of the wearer and to the rear as usual. The usual pockets 4, 4, are illustrated, and, except as hereinafter noted, the legs 5, 5, of the overalls are of usual form.
In the preferred form of the invention, each of the leg portions of the overalls, just above the knee, is provided with an overhanging hem as 6, located at the front of the leg, and preferably extending from the inner seam to the outer seam indicated at S. In the preferred form of the invention this hem is formed of the material constituting the leg portion, and is stitched to provide a firm overlapping part and provided with eyelets or openings for a lace L, which is utilized to attach to the hem the patch 8. There are two of these patches 8, one for each leg, and they are preferably made of the same material as the overalls, although not necessarily so. The patches cover the knee portion of the legs and extend from above the knee a suitable distance below the knee to protect the overalls from wear. Near the upper edge of each patch a series of spaced eyelets or openings 9 are provided and by means of the lace or shoe string L passed in and out of the eyelets 7 and 9, the patches may be securely fastened to the overlapping or overhanging hem 6 of the leg portions 5.
Each patch is provided with oppositely arranged pairs of tabs 10, 10, to which the buckle-straps 11, 11, and strap ends 12, 12, are sewed, and these devices are buckled around at the rear of the leg to hold the patches to the leg, above and below the knee of the wearer. V
In Fig. 4:, instead of using the lace, the hem 6* has the socketmember 7 of a glove or snap fastener, and the patch 8. has the head 9 of this fastening device, and the patches are attached to the hems by snapping the members together similar to fastening a glove.
In Fig. 5 a further modification is illustrated wherein the leg portion 5 has a hem 6' sewed to it as indicated at 7 In this in stance, also, the hem preferably extends from the inner seam around the front of the leg to the outer seam, and the patch, thus covers the front half of the leg portion 5'.
It will readily be seen that there are many advantages in utilizing these patches on the legs of the overalls, and that they may be attached and detached with equal facility, and that they are comparatively perfect in performing the functions for which they are intended.
Claims:
1. A bifurcated garment having an overhanging hem made from the material of the leg portions and located above the knee portion of each leg, a patch adapted to fit up above the knee, a patch adapted to fit up undereach hem, said hem and patch havunder each hem, means .for attaching the ing. Qpe irigs therein and a lace to tie the J patches to the hem, anc1 means ferv s ecuring 10 parts together, and straps for securing the the patches about the legs. '5 patches about the legs. v In testimony whereof, I afiixmy signature. 2.A' bifurcated garment'havi'ng'an'over hanging hem encircling the leg portions ANDREW W. CARLSON.
