STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. Donns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers and more particularly to the devices for securing the 010- sure on the end of the bearing sleeve,the object of the invention being to provide means whereby the cap or closure may be quickly removed from the bearing sleeve to expose the head of the staybolt for testing purposes; so that it may be as quickly replaced and so that the cap or closure will benormally held firmly to its seat on the bearing sleeve.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a staybolt structure showing an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the locking head. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of said lockin head. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the cap orc osure. Fig. 6 is an edge view of the cap or closure, and Fig. 7 is a view of a modification.
1 represents a bearing sleeve having an interior curved face 2 constituting a bearing for the head 3 of the staybolt 4.
The outer end portion of the bearing sleeve 1 is provided exteriorly with a plurality of inclined shoulders 5 forming cams. A cap or clOSuI'e 6 is seated. against the end portion of the bearing sleeve and has a general partly spherical shape with its interior dimensions and configuration such as will afford a suitable clearance space 7 for the head of the staybolt.
A locking head or carrier 8 incloses the cap or closure 6 and provided with an angular exterior portion 9 to receive a wrench. The rear edge of the portion 9 of the head or carrier 8 is provided with interior segmenshoulders 10 which are beveled or inclined to form cams to cooperate with the cam shoulders 5 on the bearing sleeve.
0 The head or carrier 8 is provided on its lnner face near the peripheral flange 9 with a plurality of cam faces 12 to cooperate with cam lugs or shoulders 13 projecting laterally from the cap or closure as shown in Fig. 5. In Fig. 7 three such lugs are shown.
The cap or closure 6 is loosely connected with the head or carrier 8 by means of a split ring 14.- mounted in a groove within the flange portion 9 of the head or carrier and underlying the cam lugs or shoulders of the cap or closure.
The parts, assembled as above explained, are app ied to the end of the bearing sleeve so that the cap or closure will rest on its seat and then the head or carrier will be turned so as to cause the cam shoulders 10 to become disposed behind and engage the cam shoulders 5 on the bearing sleeve and at the same time or immediately after the cam shoulders 10 have engaged the cam shoulders 5, a slight movement of the head or carrier relatively to the cap or closure will cause the cooperation of the cams 1213 to force the cap or closure tightly against its seat. It will be seen that with the use of my improvements, the cap or closure will be held firmly against its seat and that the binding of the cams 5 and 10 will hold the head or carrier securely to the bearing sleeve. It is apparent that by a reversal of the operations above describe the cap and its carrier will be unlocked from the bearing sleeve and may be quickly removed to expose the head of the bolt for testing purposes.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve and a cap or closure to seat thereagainst, of a head or carrier inclosing the cap or closure, cam lugs or shoulders projecting laterally from said cap or closure, cams within the cap or closure to cooperate with said cam lugs or shoulders. a
