To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, BUBNHAM C(STICK- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writing Machines, of which,the following is a specification.
This invention relates principally to the type-actions of typewriting machines, and one of its main b ects is to produce a simple, inexpensive and compact mechanism suitable for a portable typewriting machine.
The type-barsare relatively short, and pivoted in a short are close to the platen, preferably striking upon the top side of the platen, and normally extending forwardly to a position close to the keyboard and about on a level therewith; thus producing a machine that is of but very little height, and also short from front to back.
The room at the pivots of the type-bars in such a machine is necessarily reduced, and the roo for the mountings and operating mans-is limited. Moreover the keyboard is wider than the system of type-bars, and very much wider. than the length of the pivot-arc of the type-bars, since the latter converge from the types rearwardly to their pivots.
In order to meet all these conditions, I extend the key-levers convergently from the keyboard. and pivot them under the typehars, the system of type-bars and key-levers forming a bank behind which runs the platen, which may be about on a level. with the type-bars. The rear portions of the levers are arranged in the same conver ing )lanes in which the type-bars swing, an the levers are always beneath the ty e-bars, so that no more lateral room is ta on up by the levers than would be needed in any case for the type-bars themselves.
Each type-bar with its lever is pivoted compactly upon an erect thin plate. which constitutes a bracket or hanger; and also pivoted upon said plate is a sub-lever in the form of a bell-crank, which, for lateral comactness, may be connected to the key-lever y a knuckle-joint. These bell-cranks extend upwardly from the key-levers and engage in slots in the type-bars; the plates which form the hangers having a converg lng arrangement corresponding to the radial positions of the type-bars. Each plate may be forked to seat 1n grooves cut in the front and rear sides of the segment; suitable means being provided for locking the hange.

board is mounted to be capable of displacement rearwardly over and back of the keys, to be out of the way when the machine is to be packed up for transportation, thus reducing the bulk.

upon the forward ends of levers 6 of the second order, which extend rearwardly and terminate forwardly of the platen, being ulcrumed upon studs 7 the platen 1 being in a depressed or sunken position behind the bank formed by the assemblage of key levers and ty e-bars.
The ey levers are connected to the typebars by means of sub-levers, the latter pivoted upon studs 8 and comprising arms 9 extending upwardly and provided with driving wrists or pins 10 to engage slots 11 in the hub portions of the type-burs3 said slots being of great length and curved suitably to accelerate the speed of the typebars during their printing strokes.

The sub-levers 9 may have short arms 14, connected to the key levers by knuckle joints 15,80 that the sub-levers may also lie against the hangers and just over the key levers, and
beneath the type-bars, so that no lateral room is taken up by the sub-levers. Between their ends the sub-levers may be bent or oil"- set laterally at 16. to occupy the same plane? as the hangers, that is, so that the upper portions of the sublevers will be on the same sides of the type-bars as are the hangers 12. The hangers are rovided with bends at their upper ends 1 to carry the wrists 10, said bends enabling the sub-levers or bellcranks to clear the hangers 12 when in printing osition, asat Fig. 1.
T e sub-levers 9 cross the type-bars, that is, extend upwardly from beneath the typebars to points of engagement at 10 with the type-bars, above the ivots of the latter; the length of each subever from 8 to 10 being in excess of the di stance between 8 and 4.
As will be seen at Fig. 4, the rear portions of the key levers directly underlie and extend along the converging t pe-bars; The key levers extend forward y beyond the typebars, and have outwardly diverging bends at 18, which terminate in parallel forwardly-extending key-bearing portions 19. The key levers work in converging planes, and, owing to the plan of the levers, as seen at Fig. 4, the point of application of power upon each lever is in or very nearly in the plane in which said lever works, so that liability of binding or other faulty action of the lever is reduced or eliminated. In other words, the lever extends forwardly from its pivot along a line which, if extended. would touch or nearly touch its own key; the crossing of the key levers, one by another, being avoided by having the keybearing portions 19 extend substantially in parallelism directly back from the keys, and this arrangement of the key-bearing portions being facilitated by the extra convergleg portions or bends 18 of the levers, between the key-bearing portions and the rear portions that underlie the type-bars.
Each key lever may be bent upwardly at 20 near the segment 13, and downwardly at 21 to underlie the sub-lever 9. The key levers may equal or exceed the type-bars in length. thus avoiding undue slanting of the keys when depressed, without extending back to a position to interfere with the platen or its appurtenances. s
It will he understood that the key lever fnlcrums 7 are arranged in an arc concentric to lhe are of the type-bar pivots 4; and that the sub-lever bearings are also arranged in an arc concentric to said other arcs. The strokes of the sub-levers may be uniform; and the arm 14 may be made as short or as long as required in each case, so as to give the keys uniform strokes. A returning draw spring 22 may extend forwardly from each sub-lever arm 9 to a point of connection 23 to its key lever, so that each hanger, type-bar and lever may be handled as a unit.
Each hanger 12 is formed at its lower portion with forks 24, 25, to bestride'the segment 13, which has on its forward and rear sides downwardly-extending slots 26, to form seats in which the hanger may fit tightly. Each hanger may be locked in place by a locking tongue 27, sprung out,
from the side of a rk, and engaging under a. shoulder 28 formed in the notched portion of the segment. he segment may be secured by screws 29 upon a crossbar 30, and the latter mabe secured by screws 31 to ears 32 exten ing inwardly from the sides 33 of the type writer framework, so that said bar 30 may be detached from the machine, together with the segment and the entire set of typeactions, bodily. To facilitate this removal, the guide-comb 34 of the key levers is mounted by means of arms 35 and screws 36 upon the forward edge of said bar 30, to be removed or replaced therewith; and upon said guide-comb 34 ma Y be also carried by means of arms 37 a pad or rest 38 for the type-bars, and said arms 37 ma also carry a sto 39 for the key levers -w en in normal positions. Thus, by simply loosening the screws 31, the entire system oftype actions may be readily removed from the machine. i
The platen 1 may be mounted upon any suitable carriage, as indicated diagram matically at 40, and the same Ina have a letter-feeding rack 41, which may e controlled by escapement dogs 42, 43, mounted upon a rocker 44 and havin a returning spring 45, all of conventiona construction. This do rocker may be connected to a universa bar 46 placed. beneath the key levers to remain in the machine when the type-actions are lifted out; said universal ar having a. returnin spring 47. The universal bar may be ma e of considerable extent from front to back, and may be opcrated by any of a series of projections 48 formed upon the under edges of the key levers, said projections being placed at suitto insure that the universal bar 46 shall be given the same stroke by every key.
The universal bar may be carried upon arms 49, pivoted at 50 upon the frame work of the machine; and one of said arms may bear down upon a pin 51 providedupon arm 52, to which is pivoted at 53 the forward end of the link 54, whose rear end is pivoted to the dog-rocker 44; the spring 45 serving to return not only said rocker but also the link 54 and the arm 52.
The space-key 55, arranged in the usual position in front of the keyboard and ex tending along the same, is mounted to be swung upwardly and rearwardly over the keyboard to a position behind the same, as will be seen at Fi 3, to render the machine somewhat less bulky for transportation purposes. For this purpose, the key 55 is mounted upon arms 56, and forms with said arms a bail which surrounds the front por tion of the machine frame, being loosely pivoted upon the ends of pintles 57. The
printing provision of the arms outside of the machine-frame facilitates the swinging up of the ke to the dotted line position at Fig. 3, one ling the bail to clear the various parts in the swinging motion.
When down in working position, the arms 56 bear upon pins 58, which project from pendent arms 59 arranged outside of the machine frame, and fixed upon the outer ends of said pintles 57 the inner ends of the latter being rigidl connected by a bail 60, which at one end rives backwardly a horizontal rod 61, which carries at its rear a tappet 62, to strike the end of the arm 52 and drive back the link 54, to operate the carriage-feeding dog-rocker 44; a returning spring 63 being provided for the rod 61.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination of lovers extending rearwardly from the keyboard ,and converging at their rear ends, a system of converging brackets whereon said key-levers are mounted, type-bars mounted on said brackets to strike at a common print ing point, and sub-levers also mounted on said brackets to connect the key-levers to the type-bars. p
2. The combination of a levers extending rearwardly from the keyboard and conver ing at their rear ends, a system of converging brackets whereon said key-levers are mounted, type'bars mounted on said brackets to strike at a common oint, sub-levers also mounted on said brac ets to connect the key-levers to the type-bars, and a segment whereon said brackets are mounted for individual detachment.
3. The combination of a system of keylevers extending side by side' rearwardly a system of keysystem of keyfrom the keyboard and converging at their rear ends, a system of converging brackets whereon said key-levers are mounted, one bracket for each key-lever, type-bars also mounted on said brackets to strike at a common printing point, each type-bar operable independently of all the others, and a segment whereon said brackets are mounted for individual detachment.
4. The combination of a keyboard, a curving system of types of less width than the keyboard and in rear thereof, a system of rearwardly con erging bars whereon said types are mounted, a system of key-levers extending rcarwardly from the keyboard and converging at their rear ends about coincidcntly with the type-bars. and connections from the rear portions of the levers to the type-bars, said connections including sub-levers arranged about in the same converging planes as the key-levers and type bars.
5. The combination of a keyboard. a cnrv ing system of types of less Width than the keyboard and in rear thereof, a system of rearwardly converging bars Whereon said types are mounted, a system of key-levers extending. rearwardly from the keyboard and converging at their rear ends about coincidently with the typebars. connections from the rear portions of the levers to the type-bars, said connections including sublevers arranged about the same converging planes as the key-levers and typebars, and a converging system of upright plates fornn ing brackets on which the type-hars keylevers and sub-levers are mounted.
6. The combination of a thin erect plate forming a ban er, a typc-bar pivoted on one side thereof. a ey-lever pivoted to the same side of the hanger, and a sub-lever pivoted on the same side of the hanger as the key-- lever and type-bar. and having a knucklejoint connection to the key-lever and extending to the type-bar.

The combination with a platen. of a system of thin erect. plates forming hangers. a system of converging typo-bars thereon. each type-bar pivoted to one side of its hanger, a system of converging key-levers also mounted on said hangers, each key-lever pivoted on the same side of the hanger its type-bar, and means to connect the keylevcrs and type-bars. all. of said plates, type bars and levers mounted in front of the platen.
13. The combination with a platen, of a system of thin erect plates forming hangers. a system of converging type-bars thereon. each type-bar pivoted to one side of its hanger. a system of converging key-levers also mounted on said hangers. each key- Iever pivoted on the same side of the hanger as its type-bar, and means to connect the key-levers and type-bars. all of said plates. type-bars and levers mounted in front of the platen, and the platen occupying a sunken position behind said plates.
14. The combination with a platen, of a system of thin erect plates forming hangers. a system of converging type-bars thereon. each type-bar pivoted to one side of its hanger, a system of converging key-levers also mounted on said hangers. each keylever pivoted on the same side of the hanger as its type-bar, and means to connect the key'levcrs and type-bars, all of said plates, type-bars and levers mounted in front of the platen. and the platen occupying a sunken position behind said plates, and the type-bars mounted to strike upon the upper side of the platen and. normally to extend forwardly from said plates with their foraafrtli on at about the height of the byand a system ward of the type-bar and key-lever pivots 15. The combination with a' system of key-levers converging at their rear portions and pivoted at their rear ends, of a system of converging pivoted type-bars, a system of bell-cranks arranged forward of the typebar and key-lever pivots and o crating in converging planes, and each of a greater length than the distance between the pivots of the type-bar and bell-crank, and having a rearwardly-extending arm operated by the key-lever, converging hangers on which are mounted said key-levers, typebars and bell cranks, and a segment on which said hang ers are mounted; said key-levers pivoted in rear of said segment and extending forwardly over the same and bent down to pass beneath the bell -eranks, and having a knuckle-joint connection with the latter, said segment having downwardly extending slots on its front and rear sides, and said hangers forked to bestride the segment and seat in the slots thereof.

The combination with a keyboard and a framework, of a bail pivoted on the framework and extending around the forward portion of the same and having a space-key, whereby the latter may be swung back over the keyboard out of the Way, a swinging frame mounted within the framework and operable by said bail when in nor al position, and carriage-feeding means, operable by said frame.

The combination of a hanger in the form of a plate, a segment having uideways on which the hanger is slida'ble for mounting the hanger or removing it from the segment, a key lever and a type-bar mounted n the hanger, operating means connecting the key lever to the type-bar, said lever normally extending in a direction transverse to that in which the hanger is slidable, on the segment.

In combiriation, a platen, a set of radial brackets in front thereof, a set of radial erating levers connected to said key-bearing levers and pivoted on said bracket-s, said operating levers and their pivots being lo cated in front of the pivots of said typebars and key levers and directly engaging the key levers and type-bars,
In combination, a set of type-bars, a set of plates forming brackets whereon the type-bars are mounted, a set of tvpe-bar operating levers pivoted on said rackets to swing in a radial plane, and a set of keybearing levers also pivoted on said brackets to Work in the plane of said type-bars and connected to said operating levers, said oper ating levers and their pivots being located in front of the pivots of the type-bars and key levers, said brackets being detachably mounted, whereby any bracket, with the type-bar, operating-lever and key-lever, may be attached or detached as a unit.

The combination of a keyboard, a urving system of types of less Width than the keyboard and in rear thereof, a system of reanwardly converging bars whereon said types are mounted, a system of key levers extending rearward from the keyboard and converging at their rear ends about coincidently with the typebars, said bars arranged to normally extend forwardly from their pivots to overlie their key levers, and to swing to a rearwardly extending position to print, connections from the rear portions of the levers to the type-bars, each key lever and its key arranged to move in substantially the vertical plane of its connected type-bar, and converging plates forming hangers whereon said key levers and typebars are mounted, one plate for each, key lever with its type-bar.

The combination of a platen, a system of type-bars, a system f key levers opera tively connected to the type-bars, the bars and levers all arranged ,wholly in front of the platen and about on a level therewith, said type-bars mounted to strike on the up per side of the platen, but normally extending forwardly from their pivots, each typebar overlying and in the same vertical plane withits key lever, a system of thin, converging. plates, each forming an individual hanger common toboth the key lever and its type-bar, and a segment upon which the platesare mounted, the type-bars placed so closely as barely to admit the plates between the type-bars.

The combination of a platen, a system of radial type-bars mounted to strike on top of the platen, a system of key levers, a sys tem ot converging sub-1evers between the key-levers and the type-bars; all of said type-bars, key levers and sub-levers being mounted wholly in front of the platen, the key levers converging at their rear ends to lie in the same planes with their connected type-bars, and a system of thin, converging plates. each forming a hanger, each hanger having a ty n bar. key lever and sub-lever thereon.

The combination with a system of type-bars, of a segment having radial slots on its front and rear sides, and hangers to which. said type-liars are individually pivoted, suiil hangers in the form of plates forked to bestride the segment and fit in the slots thereof and each removable with its connected typehar from the segment 7 without interference with the mounting of the other hangers.

The combination with a set of typehars mounted to swing in converging planes, of a set of duplicate converging plates, each plate forming a bracket or hanger for the type-bar, each plate parallel with its typebar, a set of key levers converging to correspond with the convergence of the typehars and hangers and mounted respectively upon said hangers, means connecting said key levers to said type-bars, and a separate converging sulrlever also mounted upon each of said hangers and each engaging its key lever and its type-bar, said love at their key ends being bent out of thei converging planes to bring the keys into straight transverse banks or rows.
