To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. MILLER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, 1n the county ofMadison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rubber Boot and Shoe Repair Vulcanizers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vulcanizers generally, although in its present disclosure adapted particularly for repairing or mending rubber'articles, as for instance, rubber boots and shoes and rubbers or overshoes, including soling, halfsoling and re-heeling.
e invention .has for its object, among other things, to provide for carrying out the aforesaid ends with facility, inexpensively and efi'ectively and particularly, as contributory thereto, to provide for applying excessive pressure, '5. e., pressure to the extreme at least a thousand pounds, to parts of the object being operated upon, as for instance, to the sole or heel of a boot or shoe, which extreme pressure has been found by experience necessary to accomplish good work.
A further object of my invention is to a provide for applying pressure to any part of the article or work, in addition to applying an excessive pressure thereto.
A still further object of the invention is to provide for so disposing the work or article for operating thereon in the most convenient or advantageous manner, as for instance in operating upon a boot or shoe, to enable the turning down or rolling over of the leg thereof out of the way of applymg the required pressure thereto, as in rehealing or otherwise repairing the same.
The invention consists therefore of certain instrumentalities and features of construction, substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed as defined by the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made as to the detailed construction and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit or scope of the claims.

In putting my invention into practice, I assemble and secure the various parts in opany suitable manner, preferably as shown particularly in Fig. 1, the steam or other heating medium receiving or communicating with the hollow member 1, preferably rectangular in general outline and provided with longitudmal flanges or ledges 2 along its upper lateral edges, being supported at its ends upon the upright legs 3, which, however, may be substituted by any other suitable or equivalent means without departing from the spirit of the inven tion, as is apparent.
A. suitable water tank or receptacle 4, is suitably mounted beneath or below the hollow member 1 and has a valved pipe-connection 5 at its upper end with the latter, the valve therein being adapted to control the flow of the steam or heating medium therethrough into said member 1, whence said steam will be utilized in the vulcanizing operation, as presently disclosed.
The tank or container' l is equipped with the usual accessories, as 6, 7 and 8, for ascertaining the extent of its contents and the pressure therein and to provide for supplymg water or liquid thereto, respect vely.
Angular tubular holders 9 are provided to,
and communicate with the interior of the member or conductor 1, for receiving the vul- 1, having clamp-screws 11 working canizing heating action therefrom, said hollow angular holders being adapted to provide especially for holding rubber boots, as in repairing the same by vulcanization, as is readily appreciated.
The holders 9 are provided near their inner ends with valves 9* which allow the discharge of air, gas, water or other foreign matter which would prevent the holders from properly heating, and preferably, the holders are provided on the inside with dis charge tubes which extend on the inside thereof clear up into the toe and minimum-- cate with said valves to facilitate the foregoing result.
To these brackets are applied, one to each of two arms thereof, pressure blocks 12 provided with adjustable pressure holding thumb-screws 13, which blocks are used in connection with endless elastic or rubber members, or what may be termed bandages 14, each spanning a tubular holder 9 and a bracket 10, including a pressure block, the bandage or band being passed in contact with the latter, exteriorly of the bracket, whereby, upon suitably adjusting said thumb-screws, the band or bandage is stretched taut in engagement therewith and the article, as a boot, suitably positioned thereon for repairing, thus providing for effectively retaining the bandages in position. It will be readily understood that the point of application of the bandage is directed with respect to the break or rupture in the article or boot to be repaired, the bandage, of course, covering the rupture therein and the steam or heating agent being introduced into the hollow holder for the requisite heating of the latter necessary to the vulcanizing operation, as will be readily appreciated.
uitably positioned upon the conductor or member 1, at its ends, are preferably inverted U-shaped or yoke-like members 15, with their lower divergent inturned ter minals formed with recesses 15" for the reception therein of the longitudinal ledges or flanges 2 of the member or conductor 1, whereby said yoke-like members may be readily applied thereto and retained as against accidental detachment or slipping therefrom.
The frames or yokes 15 have screw threaded through their upper curved portions, preferably hand-wheel equipped screws 16, each having lower end swiveled connection with the upper terminal of a substantially U-shaped member 17 positioned at rightangles to the general trend of the aforesaid frames or yokes 15 and with their terminals in the plane of the latter, the lower terminals of said members 17 bearing upon the boot or shoe half sole-mold members.
An outside half sole-mold member 18, of substantially the general outline shown, approximately that of a boot or shoe half sole and which is machined, planed or level upon one surface or side, is disposed with said surface or side placed upon the recap tacle 1 to receive the heat therefrom, and upon this moldunember rests the half-sole of the rubber boot or shoe.
An inside half sole-mold member 19 of the general outline shown, conforming to that of the aforesaid half sole-mold member, is inserted within the rubber boot and pre sented to the inner surface of the sole there of and upon the inside of this sole-mold member, bears the lower terminal of the it shaped member 17.
Each til-shaped or yoke-like member 15 and a U-shaped member 17, together with the hand-Wheel screw connection 16 therebetween, form a clamp for exerting or delivering the required pressure at that point, 2'. a, upon the sole, it having been found by actual experience that my invention is capabio of delivering or exerting a powerful pressure, at least as great as a thousand pounds, upon the extent of which depends in a great measure the success or efi'ectiveness of the vulcanizing operation.
It will be observed that my invention is applicable to any of the ordinary automobile tire repairing or vulcanizing devices. Also it will be appreciated that by reason of the peculiar or ill-shaped construction of clamp herein shown and described, in repairing or vulcanizing particularly rubber boot? the legs thereof may be rolled over out o the way and thus provide for facilitating or expediting the operation.
It is believed that from the foregoing the carrying out and application of my invention in its various forms, has been made clearly appreciable, as also the benefits and advantages arising therefrom.
Having described my invention, what it claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1.
