In the general View `of Fig. 1 I have shown `but one end of an oven, and it will be understood that the opposite end of the oven iis equipped with means substantially the same 10o as that shown in Fig. 1.

Thus We have the supply of gas and air progressively and gradually reduced after the iirst period of iiring. The push rod 30 can be pulled out by hand whenever it is desired to open the duct 29. The cam 25 is constructed upon the same lines as the cam 2l so that the throttling of the air will be in synchronism with the throttling ofthe fuel gas.
The apparatus herein shown and described is the preferred construction for accomplishing the operations herein set forth but 1t Wil be understood that certain changes and:Y modifications can be made Without depart-? ing from the broad principle of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is n 1. The combination with a by-product coke oven, of means for throttling the supply of gas and air to the combustion {'lues thereof, and progressively-acting means as-y sociated with said throttling means and ac` tuating he latter to progressively throttle the iow of the gasand air.` K
2. The Ycombination with a by-product coke oven, of means for throttling: the gas supply tov the combustion flues thereof, `means for throttling the air supply to said ues, and progressively-acting-.means associated with said gas-throttling and air throttling means and actuating each of the same to progressively throttle the flow of the gas and air.

8. In a coke oven, the combination with a gas valve,`of a reversing means, and a t-hrot-l tling means operatively connected with the reversing means and moved step by step hereby.

In a coke oven, the combination of gas supply' valves and a reversing arm operative in connection therewith to direct the flow of gas in either direction, a throttling valve in connection with said gas valves, a cam for operating said throttling valve, a ratchet wheel connected with said cam, and a pawl connected with the reversing arm and operating upon the ratchet Wheel whereby at alternate reversals the ratchet Wheel and cam are advanced a tooth..
