Description

F. POI'NDEXTER.
improvement in Plows.
Patented July 16, 1872.
FRANCIS POIN DEXTER, OF FRANKLDT, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,054, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Reversible Plow, invented by FRAN- ors POINDEXTER, of Franklin, in the county of Macon and State of North Carolina.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved plow, part of one mold-board being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the plow-standards and plows detached. Fig. 4 is the same view as Fig. 3, but showing one of the plows replaced by a subsoil-plow.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved reversible plow which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, and which shall be so constructed that it may be readily adjusted for use as a reversible or hillside plow, as a turn and subsoil plow, or as a single turn or cultivating plow, as may be desired; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the plow-beam, to the forward end of which the draft is applied in the ordinary manner. B are the handles, the forward ends of which are attached to the sides of the beam A, and which are connected and held in their proper relative positions by a round, 0. The handles B are supported at the proper height by the uprights or braces D, the upper ends of which are attached to the rounds G, and their lower ends are attached to the sides of the rear part of the beam A. The rear end of the beam A is made thicker, or with an upward projection, as shown in Fig. 1, to give it the necessary strength to support the pivoting-bolt E, which passes through the rear end of the beam diagonally and in a line perpendicular with the rear end of the beam A, which is beveled 011' in a line parallel with the desired inclination of the plow-standards F. Two plow-standards, F, are used, which cross each other at right angles, or at any other desired angle, and are halved to each other, so that their forward sides may be in the same plane, and which are strengthened at their point of intersection by a metallic plate attached to them. The bolt E passes through the standards F at their intersection, as shown may be turned uponthe bolt E to bring either of said standards into working position, as may be desired. The draft-strain upon the plow-standards is sustained by a hook, G, which hooks into the eye of an eyebolt, H, attached to the lower part of the standards F. The hook G is pivoted to an eyebolt, I, attached to the beam A. The hook G passes through a hole in the lower end of a rod, J,
which passes up through a hole in the beam A, and the upper end of which is pivoted to the lever K. The forward end of the lever K is pivoted or hinged to the beam A, and its rear end extends back into such a position that it may be conveniently reached and operated by the plowman. To the lever K is attached a plate, L, the rear part of which projects downward, and is notched or forked to receive and fit upon the upper corner of the rear end of the beam A, and upon the standard F, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. M are stops attached to the sides of the standards F in such position as to strike against the side of the rear end of the beam A to stop the standard in proper position for the hook G to enter the eye of the eyebolt H, and for the clutch I to take hold of the standard F. N are right and left hand plows attached to the lower ends of the standards F. If desired, one of the plowstandards F and its plow N may be detached and replaced by a standard, F, having a subsoil-plow, 0, attached to it, so that each furrow may be subsoiled by the return trip. If desired, a single standard, F, provided with a turn-plow, a cultivator-plow, or any kind of a plow, may be used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The intersecting plow-standards F, in combination with the pivoting-bolt E and rear end of the plow-beam A, substantially as herein shown and described, and forthe purpose set forth.
