Description

IV E S.
.CLI
Pa ented July 16, 1872.,
mr MMMQMQK d ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES IVES, OF MOUNT CARMEL, OONNEOTIOUT,`ASSIGNOR TO IVES, WOOD- RUFF St OO., OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT lN HUB-BANDS FOR VEHICLE-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,961, dated July 16, 1872.
To all ywhom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, JAMES IVEs, of Mount Carmel, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Hub-Band and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a diametrical section through a wheel-hub having my improved band applied to it. Fig. 2 is a diametrical section through the band.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the'several figures.
The object of this invention is to improve a hub-band for vehicles of all kinds, wherein are combined in its construction an outwardly-flaring end, an internal shoulder, and a beveled inner end, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following is a description of my new and improved manufacture:
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a wooden hub, and B the axle, which passes through the hub and receives a washer, d, and nut c on its outer end. The cuter end of the hub is turned cylindrical to receive aband, O, as shown in the drawing, which band is driven on the hub and secured in place by means of pins or screws. The band O is constructed in the following manner: It is a right cylinder terminating at or about the middle of its length in an outwardly-daring or bell-shaped portion. The cylindrical portion a is beveled on its inner edge, as shown at i, and embraces the cylindrical portion of the hub, as shown in Fig. l. It is also perforated to receive through it the pins which fix the band on the hub. At the outer termination of this cylindrical portion of the band O, interiorly is a shoulder b, which assists in the process of casting and finishing, and improves the appearance of the band. From this point b the band presents interiorly an outwardly-flaring portion, a', which not only incloses the nut and washer c d, as the old and Well knownhub-bands do, but it also allows a free application of a wrench for unscrewing the nut c, and by means of its outward are, and a silver or golden plating, it presents a beautiful glaring appearance. The shoulder b, which is combined with the Haring outer portion of the band, may be made heavier or lighter, as required, to make the band more or less iiaring inside, and thus improve the reiiecting quality of the band as an ornament to a carriage-hub.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A new and improved article of manufacture, consisting of a hub-band, which is cylindrical for a portion of its length, and outwardly flaring the other portion of its length, terminating in an internal shoulder at b, substantially as described.
