APPLICATION FILED 05c. 14. I915.

LOUIS E. F. WACHTEB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Application filed December 14, 1915. Serial No. 66,675.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS E. F. WACHTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings herein referred to which are made a part hereof.
This invention relates to watches and more particularly a means for securing the socalled crystal to the case. In particular, among the objects of the invention is to efiect a more perfect closure, and also to make possible a water-proof case, that is, to prevent ingress of moisture or water, or other foreign matter through the joints between the crystal and the case. By crystals is to be understood the so-called crystal usually consisting of glass, or any other suitable material for the transparent covering of the face of the watch.
The particular embodiments of my invention herein referred to I have shown in the construction.
accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a watch.
Fig. 2 is a side View of a crystal and part of bezel in vertical section.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of bezel and crystal of a watch in horizontal position.
Fig. "4 is a view in section of a modified d Fig. 5 is a view in section of a modified construction.
The watch case center A has a crystal B,
which is secured to the bezel G. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the bezel has on its inner rim bifurcated edges adapted to contain material .D, which may be rubber or cement, or
other suitable material which will receive.
the edge of the crystal and seal the joint so as to form a water-proof, moisture-proof or dust-proof connection between the crystal and the bezel.
- In Fig. 3, the crystal B engages by a snap groove with the bezel C, while on the inner side of the bezel an annular projection c is formed, which engages with an annular band G, fitting inside of the bezel and having one portion engaging the dial, While an arm of the band engages the inner surface of the thereby forming a seal on the inner surface of the crystal and a pocket is formed between the bezel projection c and the band G, so that any foreign material accidentally passing through the snap connection between the crystal and the bezel, will be held in the pocket and not permitted to pass further onto the dial or into the works.
In Fig. 4 the bezel C" has an integral projection comprising a thin band F having an annular groove as shown, which is of such dimension and shape as to form a suflicient spring so that when the edge of the crystal B is snapped into the snap groove f, the inner surface of the crystal will press against the inner edge of F, forming a sealing and therebv prevent ingress of foreign matter.
In Fig. 5, the bezel 0" projects over the crystal engaging its outer surface, and thereby forming a flat contact, while the extreme edge of the crystal engages a band E, which has a groove 6, and this band setting on the surface of the dial and having a thickness spring-pressed contact between the ring E and the crystal edge, and also a pressed con-.
tact between the overlapping edge of the belzel C and the outer surface of the crysta It will be evident that my invention may be modified as to details of dimensions and material, and still embody the spirit of my invention. Changes in construction may be desirable when embodied on large or small time pieces. In all, the crystal may be secured or snapped into the bezel, of my construction, in the usual Way, when embodied in certain forms, or may be put in from the inside and the bezel snapped to the watch center on top of the crystal, to produce the desired advantageous construction.
Without limiting myself to the precise form in which my invention is herein specifically shown and described, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination with a watch, a bezel rim having a bifurcation forming two flanges, a crystal having its edge engaged between said flanges, one of said flan esengaging said bezel for engagement with the case the surface of the crystal outsi e of the edge parts of a Watch. 10 and the other of said flan es overlapping Signed at New York, this 13th day of and engaging the under sur ace of the crys- December 1915.
tal Within the edge, reinforced means on one LOUIS 'E. F. WACHTER.
of said flanges ermitting the formation of Witnesses:
a water-tight joint between the borderpf the DANIEL J. GUINAN, crystal and the flanges, an edge portlon on H. MUCHMORE.
