WILLIAM T. LANE, 0F BAYSIDE, YORK, ASSIGNOE T0 FRANKLIN RAILWAY SUPPLY COMPANY, 0F WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, A CORPDBATON 0F DELWLRE.
FIRE-DOOR APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, WILLIAM T. LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayside, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovement in .Fire-Door Apparatus, of which improvement the following is a specification.
r1l`his invention relates to fire door apparatus for locomotive boilers, and more particularly to boilers having large fire door openings with double doors of the so-called butterfly type, in which the door plates swing laterally and vertically in opposite directions, one of the objects being to provide an improved motor device for operating either one ol the door plates separately and independently of the other. Another object is to provide an improved hand-operated device for opening either door independently.
With these and other objects in view, my invention comprises a certain construction and combination of parts which will nonT be fully described, the novel features being set 'orth in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a front elevation of a lire door apparatus embodying my improvement; Fig. 2 a detail view showing a portion of one of the door plates and the cylinder partly in section; and Fig. 3 a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
ln locomotive boilers provided with large lire door openings and double doors of suficient width to allow for delivering fuel through the same into the fire box at either side when only one door is open, itis desirable that the two doors should be independently operable in order that onedoor may be kept closed at the time of tiring and thus prevent the admission olD large quantities of cold air to the fire box, while at the same time economizing in the-use of power and reducing the wear of the apparatus.
According to the construction shown, a frame 5, is bolted to the back head of the locomotive boiler around the lire door opening, and carries the two pivot bolts 6, and 6a, on which are mounted the two door plates, 7 and 7a, which are adapted to swing laterally and vertically and meet together upon a vertical center line when in the normal closed position. A horizontal cylinder Specioation of Letters Patent.

8, is also mounted above the door and contains two pistons 9, and 9a, at opposite ends of the cylinder, said pistons having pins l0, and 10a, projecting out through a slot 11, in the cylinder. rlhe doors are provided with arms 12, and 12a, which are connected by the respective links 13, and 133, with the pins of the pistons for operating the doors with Huid pressure, the armand link being so positioned as to occupy a straight line in the full open position of the door, thereby operating as a cushionto the openin movement in that position.
lanual valve devices 14, and 14ga, may be employed for controlling the fluid supply to and the exhaust from the respective ends of the cylinder, the valves 'being usually actuated by a well known form of pedal appliance, not shown. By operating one of the 'manual valves, either right or left as desired, the corresponding door may be opened by duid pressure admitted to act upon the piston at that end of the cylinder,
and then as the duid ressure is permitted to exhaust the door wilFbe closed by gravity.
ln order to operate, the doors ,or either of them, by hand two handles 15, and l5, are pivotally mounted on the respective bolts or. pins 16, and 16, on which are also mounted the sleeves 17, and 17a, and gear' segments 18, and 18a, the latter being ar- -ranged to mesh with corresponding gear segments 19, and 19a, respectively, on the door plates 7, and 7a. rl`he sleeves are provided with projections 20, and 20a, for engaging corresponding lugs 2l, and 21a, on the respective segment gears 18, and 18a. Each handle is connected with its respective sleeve so as to have a relative lateral movement to provide for cooperation with the usual notches of its respective quadrant 22, or 22a, as will be readily understood.
lV hen one of the doors is operated by fluid pressure the gear segment is turned in such direction that the lug 18 moves away from the projection 20 of the sleeve 17, so that the handle remains stationary in its notch upon the quadrant. .Vhen it is desired to open the door by hand, the handle is pulled down and the projection on the sleeve engages the lug on the gear segment so as to rotate the same with it, and by means of the intermeshing gears the door is swung up on its pivot to its open position. as indicated in dotted lines.
When it is desired to shovel coal onto the ire at either side of the tirebox, torinstance at the left hand side, *the valve device la, is opened by the reman in the usual way, thus admitting compressed air from the supply pipe to the pipe leading to the left hand in opposite directions, a fluid pressure cylinend of cylinder '8, where it actuates the piston 9a, to move the pin 10a, andlink 13a, connected to the lug l2, ot the door 7, and causing the door to swing upward on its pivot to the open position, indicated in dotted lines in Fig, l. rl`he door 7, at the other side inthe meantime remains closed.'
and prevents the admission of cold air vthrough that side ot |the rebox while the reman is delivering coal through the door at the lett hand side. When he has delivered the coal through said door and wishes to close the same he releases the valve device .permitting the same *to close, thus shutting od the supply of duid to the cylinder and opening the exhaust port 23, tor allowing v the duid to exhaust from the cylinder andl 'the door to close by gravity.
llt will now be seen that by means ot my improvement either one of the door plates may be operated separately and independentl'y of the other, and either by fluid pressure or by hand, as desired.. l
-Having now described my invention, what l claim 'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. ln a fire door apparatus, the combination or" two door plates mounted to swing laterally and vertically in opposite ldirections and adaptedto cover the furnace opening, a horizontal cylinder above said doors,
`two pistons at opposite ends ot said cylinder, and a mechanical connection from each piston to one of said doors for operating the 'same independently.
2. ln a lire ldoor apparatus, the combination, of two door plates pivotally mounted to swing laterally and vertically in opposite directions, a horizontal cylinder above the door, two pistons in said cylinder, each door plate having an arm extending above its pivot, and a link connecting each piston with one of said arms.
3. lln a hre door apparatus, the combination with two door plates mounted to move der, two pistons yat opposite ends of said cylinder, connections froml said pistons to the respective door plates, and independent man- .ually operated valves for controlling the operating the door.
5.111 a lire door apparatus, the combina ition of a door plate` pivotally mounted to swing laterally and vertically, a cylinder and pistonfor operating said. door, a handle mounted on a pivot separate from that of the door plate, a gear segment carried by the door, another gear segment meshing with the hist and mounted on the pivotal axis of the handle, and means actuated by thel handle for turning said gears. Y l
6. lin a dre door apparatus, the combination of a doorplate pivotally mounted to swing laterally and vertically, a cylinder and piston for loperating said door, a haridle mounted on a pivotV`A separate trom that ot the door plate, a'sleeve operated by the handle and provided with a projection, a
gear segment carried by the door, and an-l m hand.
