TABLE HAVING FOLDING-SEAT ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1918.
Application filed June 17, 1916. Serial No. 104,242.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E. JENKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables Having Folding-Seat Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others. skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in tables having folding seat attachments, especially adapted for use as a telephone table; and, to this end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined, in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, whlch illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention with the seat attachment in an operative position;
Fig. 2 is a View corresponding to Fig. 1, with the exception that the seat is folded into an inoperative position; and
Fig. 3 is a central vertical section illustrating the seat attachment partly folded.
Of the parts of the table illustrated, the numeral 1 indicates a rectangular flat top and the numeral 2 indicates the legs. These legs 2 are connected at their upper ends in rectangular arrangement by rails 3 on which the top 1 directly rests. It is important to note that the rails 3 are so secured to the legs 2 that their outer faces project only slightly outward from the inner faces of said legs. The two legs 2, on each side of the table, are connected at their intermedi ate portions by a rail 4. A shelf 5 is supported on and secured to the rails 4: and its outer edges are vertically alined with the outer faces of the rails 3.
The seat attachment for the table comprises a seat 6 and a pair of legs 7. The seat 6 is of a width to closely fit between the two front legs 2 of the table and has on its sides depending flanges 8. hen the seat 6 is in an operative position, the inner Copies of this patent may be obtained for end thereof projects under and closely engages the shelf 5 between the rails 4. The seat 6 is connected to the front legs 2 of the table, for compound sliding and folding movement from an operative position to an inoperative position, in which it is entirely located under the top 1 and within the plane of the front legs 2. The pins of these connections 9 are anchored in the front legs 2 and the slots thereof are formed in the in- A ner end portions of the flanges 8. The purpose of the slots in the connections 9 is to permit a limited endwise movement of the seat 6 to clear the top 1.
The legs 7 are rigidly connected at their upper ends by a rail 10 and are also connected by pivot pins 11 to the flanges 8 for fold ing movement therebetween. (See Fig. 2.) The legs 7 are always held, under the action of gravity, in vertical positions and when folded, are located entirely within the plane of the flanges 8.
The above described seat attachment is very easy to operate and when not in use, is folded entirely under the table top 1 and within the plane of the front legs 2. The folding movement of the seat attachment is limited by the front rail 3 and the weight thereof is so distributed, as to hold the seat attachment in a folded position. When moving the seat attachment to and from an operative position, the legs 7 do not have to be touched, as they always remain in the same position, with respect to the vertical.
What I claim is 'The combination with a leg supported table top and a shelf located therebelow, of a seat attachment pivoted, at its inner end, to certain of the legs below the shelf and outward thereof for vertical swinging movement, and a folding leg supporting the outer end of the seat attachment, the pivoted end of the said attachment extending under the shelf and substantially engaging the same when in a horizontal position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
