AUTOMATIC LOCKING DEVICE FOR FIRE-WINDOWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1918.
Application filed April 10, 1916. Serial No. 90,126.
To all w/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. DRUMMOND, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Locking Devices for Fire-Windows, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to metallic Window sashes, and it is the object to provide means for automatically locking the sash in case of fire. To this end the invention comprises a locking detent and means for holding said detent out of locking position, adapted to be released upon the abnormal heating of the sash.

Figure 1 is a section throu h adjacent portions of a window sash and rame showing the locking detent therefor, as normally held out of engagement;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the locked position of the detent;

Fig. 4 is an elevation of Fig.
A is the rail of a movable window sash, and as specifically shown is the rail of a swinging sash. B is the stationary frame against which the sash rail abuts in closed position, the construction being preferably such as to provide a two-point contact. C is a detent on one of said members for engaging a coperating detent or shoulder D on the other member, to lock said members from relative movement. The member C is, however, normally held from such engagement by a fusible retainer, so that the sash is free to be opened or closed, but upon the abnormal heating and the fusing of this retainer, the detent will engage with the shoulder D and lock the parts in closed position. S ecically the member C is in the form o a hinge, one member of which C is attached to the member A by an infusible rivet D', while the other member is attached by a fusible rivet E. Both parts are preferably located in the recess F between the members A and B, which is formed between the angle Copies ot this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the sections of said members. Thus normally the section C2 of the member C is held in the position shown in Fig. l, where it will clear the shoulder D and permit the outward swinging of the member A; but upon abnormal heating and the fusing of the rivet E said section C2 will drop down into the position shown in Fig. 2, where it will lock the members A and B from relative movement.
IVhat I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with a window frame and a Ventilator sash movable in said frame, said sash and frame coacting to form a closed chamber in one position, of a detent for locking said sash in closed position located in said chamber, and means for holding said detent in inoperative position releasable upon abnormal heating of the sash.
2. The combination with a window frame and a ventilator sash movable therein, of a member comprising two hinged plates one of said plates having a nonusible connection to one of said members and the other plate a fusible connection therewith, the last mentioned plate being gravity operated into locking engagement with the other member upon fusion of said connection.
3. The combination with a window frame and a ventilator sash movable in said frame, said sash and frame coacting to form a closed chamber in a certain position of the sash, a pivoted locking member located in said chamber and a fusible connection between said member and sash normally retaining said member in inoperative position.
4. The combination with a window frame and a ventilator sash movable in said frame, of a detent for locking said sash in closed position occupying a position between the sash and frame when the former is closed, and means for holding said detent in inoperative position releasable upon abnormal heating of the adjacent parts.
