IMPROVEMENT IN WHIFFLETREE DRAFT-EYES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,828, dated July 9, 1872. e
' Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Whiffletree Draft-Eye, invented by EDWARD E. TOMPKINS, of Sing Sing, county of Westchester, State of New York.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a top view of my improved whififletree-eye when allowed to hang free. view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section of the same. My invention has for its object to furnish an improved draft-eye for whiffletrees, which shall be so constructed that the tug cannot come off accidentally, and which shall at the same time be simple in construction, convenient in use, reliable in operation, inexpensive in manufacture, and at the same time neat and light in appearance; and it consists in the draft-eye constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents a screw, which is designed to be screwed into the end of e a whiffletree, B, as shown in Figs. 4, 6, and 7. Upon the outer end of the screw A is formed ahead, 0, which is elongated to form a neck or stem to receive the eye of a tug, D, as shown in Figs. 5 and 8. To the outer end of the neck or stem 0 is swiveled a cross-head or button, E, upon the side of which is formed a toe, F, which projects along and fits upon the side of the neck or stem 0, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 5, 6. If desired, the toe F may be extended around the neck or stem 0 to form an eccentric sleeve, as shown in Figs. 7 and'S but I prefer the construction first described as being more sensitive to slight movements of the tug. If desired, the stem 0 may extend entirely through the swiveled cross-head or button E, and may have a stationary cross-head, G, attached to or formed upon it as may be desired, as shown in Figs. 4, 5,6, 7, 8.
In using the device the swiveled cross-head E is turned into line with the eye of the tug I), and parallel with the stationary cross-head G when used, and the tug-eye is passed over it. The pressure of the sides of the tug-eye upon the toe or eccentric F, forces said toe into one or the other end of said tug-eye, bringing the bottom or cross-head E at right angles with the length of the tug-eye, and keeping it there, however much the said tug may swing about, so that it will be impossible for the tug to become accidentally detached.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I An article of manufacture, consisting of screw A, elongated head 0, neck 0, swiveled button E, and toe F, all constructed and put together as set forth.
