CIGARETTE-CASE.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 31, 1918. Serial No. 237,427.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEST OLDENBUsoH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cigarette-Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to cigarette cases of the thin metal shell type for holding a single layer of cigarettes.

The invention has for its general objects to provide a case of improved construction which permits of the easy and convenient placing of the cigarettes therein without danger of the cigarettes being broken, the case being composed of half sections which are hinged together at the bottom so that the case can be completely opened for placing the cigarettes therein, one section of the case having seats arranged in a line so that the cigarettes can be placed in the seats and held thereby in proper spaced relation when the case is closed.

The upper part of each half or section of the case is a hinged closing member held by a suitable locking means and each acted on by a spring, so that when the locking means is released the upper part of the case will open, with the cigarettes projecting therefrom in a convenient manner to be removed.

For a more complete understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and claims taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cigarette case with the cover members opened;

Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the case entirely open for the reception of the cigarettes;

Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the case completely closed;

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a cigarette case showing a modified construction;

Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical view of the construction shown in Fig. 4; and

Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on the line 6-6, Fig. 5, with cigarettes in the case.

Referring to the drawing, A designates the cigarette case, which is composed of two substantially similar sections 1 and 2 made of metal or other suitable material, each section being a rectangular shallow pan-like piece, and the two sections are connected to gether by a hinge 3 at the bottom, so that when the sections are closed together they form a hollow casing for holding a single row or layer of cigarettes in parallel relation to each other. Each section has an upper closing or cover member 4 adapted to swing on a hinge 5, and at the hinge is a spring 6 which is normally under tension to throw the members 1 to a position at right-angles to the body of the casing, as shown in Fig. 1. A latch 7 is carried by a spring 8 which is fastened at 9 on one member 4: in such position that the latch will engage a catch 10 on the other member 4. ()n the latch is a lug 11 which projects through an opening 12 so that by pressing inwardly on the lug the latch 7 is removed from the catch 10, so that the two members 4: will spring open from the closed position shown in Fig. 3 to the open position shown in Fig. 1.

Any suitable means may be employed to hold the sections 1 and 2 together in closed position. In the present instance the section 1 has a bar 13 which extends at right-angles to the hinge 3 and one edge is provided with a notch 14: in which is a catch lug 15 that is adapted to enter and interlock with an aperture 16 in the section 2 to thereby releasably hold the body of the casing closed.

To hold the cigarettes parallel and in proper order while they are being arranged in the open case, as in Fig. 2, the section 2 has a row of corrugations forming seats 17 formed by stamping the metal in a suitable die, and each cigarette is placed to engage in a seat 17 which is concave to correspond to the curvature of the cigarette.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4: the seats for holding the individual cigarettes are formed in an extra plate 18 which is attached to the section 2 by hinge ears l8 which engage the pintle 5 of the hinge 5, and the plate 18 is provided with parallel corrugations so that each corrugation forms a seat for a cigarette. The advantage of this construction is that the outside surface of the section 2 is not disfigured, as shown in Fig. 1.
