FLAG DISPLAY DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED APPLE 19M Dav 67.25227":
Handy fi. Le Duo,
NANCY B. LE DUC, 0F PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
FLAG-DISPLAY DEVICE.
Application filed April 9, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NANCY B. LE DUO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flag-Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make a flag display device and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing a wounded soldier equipped with my flag display device, and displaying the flag for the purpose of indicating that he needs help.
Fig. 2 is av view in elevation showing a marching man equipped with a flag display device embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional detail showing the flag display device with the Hag folded.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view analogous to Fig. 3, illustrating the operation of unfolding the flag.
The base 1 has a plurality of legs 2 provided with buttons 3. The tubular casing at is rigidly mounted upon the base 1; the expansive coil spring 5 is mounted in the casing l; the plunger 6 is mounted in the casing i against the coil spring 5; the flag stafi 7 is fixed in the plunger 6; and the flag 8 is attached to the upper end of flag staff '7 and rolled tightly upon the flag start; the paper tube 9 is applied to the rolled flag and the flag is pressed downwardly into the casing i; a retaining dog 10 is connected to the upper end of casing at by the pivot 11; a spring 12 is inserted under the handle 13 against the casing 4 and the retaining arm 14 extends from the dog 10 across the end of the casing to engage the upper end of the flag staff 7 and hold the flag in the casing against the tension of the spring 5; and a cutting edge 15 is formed upon the point of the dog 14.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
Serial No. 227,581.
The flag display device so constructed is adapted to be attached to the garment by inserting the buttons 3 into button holes.
One of the primary objects is to supply soldiers with these flag display devices before the soldiers go into battle, so that when the soldier is wounded and crippled upon the iattlefield, he may use the flag display device to indicate that he is still alive and needs help. The flag is displayed by pressing the handle 13 to move the arm 1% out of engagement with the end of the flag staff 7, and as the spring 5 shoots the flag out of the casing 4, the edge 15 will draw along the side of the tube 9 and slit the tube so that the flag will be released to unfold.
The flag display device may also be used for patriotic purposes, such as marching, Fourth of July celebrations, and the like.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A flag display device comprising a base, means upon the base for attaching to a garment, a casing extending from the base, aspring in the casing, a plunger against the spring, a flag statf extending from the plunger, a. flag rolled upon the flag staif and in- I serted into the casing, and a dog for holding the flag in the casing against the tension of the spring.
2. A flag display device comprising a tubular casing, a spring mounted in the easing, a plunger slidingly mounted in the casing against the spring, a flag statt fixed to the plunger, a flag attached to the flag staff and rolled upon the flag staff and inserted into the casing, and a means for holding the flag in the casing against the tension of the spring and for releasing the flag to be discharged from the casing and unfold.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
NANCY B. LE DUC.
