vented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bale ties.
Heretofore bale ties have been made with open slots to receive the band; in some instances the open portion of the slot is parallel with the pull exerted, and in others, it is at right'angles to the pull. It is the latter form of tie to which my invention is directed. In practice, when pull is exerted on the band, and because of the open end of the slot, the body portion of the tie breaks open, and considerable difficulty has been experienced in this direction, although the open end structure is by far preferable and more convenient for the insertion of the band.
The prime object of this invention is to provide a flange in line with the open portion of the slot, and strengthen the tie in parallel relation with the pull exerted when applying a band adjacent the flange whereby when pull is applied in opposite directions, the strain is centralized in line with the flange and the opening leading to the slot. It follows, therefore, that the flange not only serves as a means for locating the band in the slot, but it very materially adds to the strengthening of the corrugated portion of the body at the point where the strain is centralized.
Vith these and other objects the invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described andv particularly pointed out in the claim.

1 indicates a metal body portion formed with a slot 2, open at one end at 3. The sides of the body portion taper, forming somewhat the shape of a key stone.
The wall of the slot adjacent the opening 3, is extended to provide flanges 4, and
the opposite wall of said slot is provided 1 with a central extension to form a flange 5, which is in alinement with the opening 3. The edges of the respective flanges taper toward the side walls of the slot to form seats for the bent ends of the band.
The body portion of the tie between the flange 5, and the outer edge is corrugated, the corrugations being disposed parallel to the short walls of the slot, or in parallel relation to the pull exerted by the bands when tying a bale. I
In operation, the bent ends of a band are inserted through the opening 3, and are moved down in the opposite seats adjacent the side walls of the slot. When pull is exerted on the band, owing to the opening 3, the entire strain is thrown on the body portion beyond the flange 5. As the line is avoided, inasmuch as the corrugations act to increase the resistance. It is obvious that the corrugations add strength to that part of the body portion where the greatest strain occurs, and furthermore the flange 5, in addition to serving as aguide for the band, lends additional'strength to the device at the weakest point in the structure. It follows therefore, that the tie is reinforced or strengthened at the point of greatest strain, and at a centralized point midway between the bands and in line with the opening leading to the slot.
The tapered sides of the tie assist in performing an important function in this invention, inasmuch as the gradual increase in the length of the corrugations adds metal, and therefore increases the resistance of the strains at the outer edge of the body portion.
