answer.
Be it known that l, HAnoIio RowN'rnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenilworth, county of Cook, Statelof Illinois, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chairs, settees or the like. i l
The object of a chair which is simple in structure, ble, and economical of manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a chair, settee or the like, which may be tilted backwardly to anydesired degree for convenience or comfort.
A further object of the inventionyisto provide means for preventing a chair, scttee or the like, from overturning due to the backwardly tilted position thereof.
Further objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists of the construction, a combination, location, and relative arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown by the accompanying drawing, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing,-
Figure 1 is a View in side elevation, partly broken, of a chair embodyin my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in front e evation of the a same. with the chair in upright position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view, parts being in section. a
Fig. 4 is a sectional view takenon the line i, 4, rig. e.
T he same part is designatedby the same reference numeral wherever it occurs throughout the several views.
It is among the special purposes of my present invention to provide a chair which may be tilted backwardly to any. desired degree for the purpose of recliningtherein, and in connection therewith to afford means for the rear legs or supports of the chair to be shifted or inclined rearwardly in accord- Ispice with the degree of tilting of the chair lt Will be understood, however, while I have mentioned my invention as applied to chairs, and will hereinafter describe a chair constructed in accordance therewith, theinvention is equally Well adapted to be applied to settees, couches, or similar articles of fur-. niture used for similar purposes.
the invention isto provide dura- Specification of Letters Patent. i Application filed November 4, 1915. serial No. 59,539.
Patented 10 cc. 3,11%1d.
Referring to the drawings, 1 show one simple embodiment of myinvention as applied to a chair wherein I employ the usual chair back 1, and seat 2, rigidly secured with respect to each other. Curved arm rests 3 are suitably secured to the back 1 and the seat 2. If desired, and as shown, the front legsor supports 4:, for the chair. seat may be formed in one piece with the arm restsf3, but my invention in its broad scope is not to be limited or restricted in this respect.
Pivotally secured to the .seat back 1,, by suitable means, such as bolts5, arethe rear legsor supports 6, a projection"? on theupper ends ofthe same being adaptedto pass dlreetly beneath the lower edge of the curved arm restsin a groove8 therein, as
aivots 5. lnaccordance with my invention propose to pro ect the rear legs or supports rearwardly when atilted position of the chair is desired, thereby securing the tilting of the back and seat and at the same time affording the necessary rear support for the same to prevent the chair from tilting completely over backwardly, and in con.- nection therewith to employ means for suitably locking the rear legs or supports in any desired degree of rearward projection. A simple arrangement for accomplishing this result is shown wherein the groove 8 of the under surface of the arm rests 3 is provided with openings?) projecting from the grooves into the arm rest as shown, spaced apart in any desirable manner, according to the degree of tilting desired, and positioned radially upon said arm rest with respect to the pivots 5 of the legs 6 on correspondingly opposite sides of the chair seat 2. Normally maintained to project out of the top end of the legs 6, bymeans of a spring 10, is a bolt 11. A thumb screw 1? passes through a slot 13 in theouter side of each of the rear legs 6, and is attached to the spring bolt 11, as shown, so that when the thumb screw 12 is depressed, in the slot 13, it carrieswith it to its depressed position, againstthe action of the spring 10, the bolt 11, withdrawing the same outof the hole 9, and allowingthe leg 6 to be rocked about its pivot tothe desired position thereof, the bolt 11, dueto the pressure of the spring 10, automatically locking the leg in its position, when the end a thereof comes in line with one of the holes 9. If desired and as shown, the openin 13 in the outer surface of thelegs 6, may e 111- shown, when the legs are rocked about their 1' closed by a plate'15, secured to the legs by means of screws 16.
While I have shown and described specific means for securing the locking of the legs and the degree of tilting of the chair structure, it will be understood that my inven-' tion, in its broad scope, is not to be limited thereto, as many other arrangements Will readily occur to those skilled in the art Without departing from the broad scope of my invention as defined in the claims;
Having now set-forth the objects and nature of my invention, and a structure embodying the prine'iples thereof, What I claim as-nevv and useful and-of my own invention,- and desire to s'ecure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. Y Ina chair frame structure, the com-bination w'itha back therefor, of arm rests provided-With grooves onthei-r under surfaces, front and rear legs forsaid frame, saidrear legs being vpivotally mounted on said frame provided with means at the ends thereof fortraveling in said grooves of said arm rests when said rear legs are rocked about Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing'the their pivots, and means for locking said rear legs in position.
2. In a chair frame structure, the combination with a back therefor, of arm rests provided With grooves on their under surfaces, spaced holes in said grooves, front and rear legs for said frame, said rear legs being pivotally mounted on said frame and provided with means at the ends thereof for HAROLD ROWNTREE.
