To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. RIVARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and tion. This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in engraving machines,
. and more particularly to that type of en ass graving machine set forth in my application for patent Serial No. 190028, filed Sep-- tember 6, 1917.
In my former construction I provided a machine for engraving or cutting patterns on rolls, copying a pattern from another roll. The present invention seeks to provide a machine having a stylus and cutter for operating on a cylindrical member or roll and 'adisk, one of which two last named elements bears the pattern for reproduction upon the other element. Thus, should the pattern be carried on the roll, the reproduction on the disk will be more or less annular in formation.

Referring-to corresponding parts by like characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates the body of the machine provided with spaced pairs of bearings 2 in which are jour naled the shafts 3 and 4, the pattern shaft being extended to carry a drive gear 5 which derives its source of power from a suitable transmission. The work operating shaft i .th
carries a fixed gear 7 that is interposed between a pair of slid-able gears 8 for selective mesh therewith. Said gears 8 are carried on a third shaft 9 having driving connection with shaft 3 through beveled gearing 10, thereby providing positive drivefor each shaft 3 and at, the ratio between the connecting gears being such as to give the shafts similar rotary movement.
The stylus and cutter carrying-beam 11 is crum plate 12 for relative horizontal move ment toward and from the workand pattern, and for vertical movements said fuioruro plate is carried by a shaft 13 which is journaled in bearings 14 on the frame 11. Substantially midway between its ends, the beam 11 is provided with a roller bearing 15 that rides in and out on'the underlying and outwardly extending bracket arm 16 which may be ad usted vertically through the medium of a screw 17.
Adjustably mounted on the beam 11 is a tracer 18, opposite the pattern shaft 3, and a milling cutter 19, opposite the work shaft 4,
said cutter being rotated by means of an endless belt '20 passing about the pulley 21, on the cutter shaft and the several idlers '22 and take-up 23.
As in my former construction, a beveled gear 24 is fixed on the forward end 'ofthe pattern shaft 3 for meshing with and driving the beveled gear 25 which'is fixedly carried on the lower end of a vertical shaft 2-6. This shaft is journaled in the overhanging bearing 27 of a bracket 28 that has spaced supporting webs for seating on the bearings 2 where it is secured by suitable fastenings 29. j
A bracket 30 is secured to the front of the frame and beneath the overhanging bracket 28 by fastenings 31, and through said bracket 30 is passed a vertical centering pin 32 for supporting the pattern roll 83.
The work disk 3i is secured within a chuck 35 which is carried on the forward end of shaft t so as to directly oppose the cutter.
In operation, thetracer or stylus, in its movements over the pattern roll, imparts an in and out motion to the beam which accord ingly controls the cut of the milling cutter on the work disk, reproducing the pattern on the latter in a manner, so to speak, as if the periphery of the roll was laid out fiat and en bent into annular dish-like form. Owing to the relative spacing of the cutter and stylus from the pivotal mounting of the beam 11, the reproduction will in this inpivotally supported at one endby the fulstance be on a reduced scale, but by simplyv reversing the position of the pattern roll, the reproduction will be enlarged relative to the pattern;
