Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1918.
Application filed April 7, 1916. Serial No. 89,663.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EMIL KUHN-FREI, a citizen of the Swiss Confederation, residing at Neumiihle uai No. 8, Zurich, Switzerland, have invente new and useful Improvements in Electric Pocket-Lamps, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
The present invention relates to a new and improved electric pocket lamp.
One object of the invention is to provide a pocket lamp having no galvanic battery on replacing t e same by a dynamo driven by a sprlng.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for tensioning the spring whilethe lamp is used.
The present invention comprises other features which will appear in the course of the subjoined description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specificatlon, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side section-on line AB of Fig. 2 showing the interior of the pocket lamp.
2 is a section on line OD of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top view of the lamp shown in Flg. 1.
In the drawings 1 represents a casing of sheet metal. A side 2 of the casing 1 is hinged to the casing 1 by means of a pin 3 fixed in the front wall 7 and in the back wall 8 of the casing 1. On the pin3 there is a coiled spring 4 one end of which is fixed to the pin 3 the other end rests on the wall 2. The sprin 4 tends to hold the wall 3 in the position sfiown in Fig. 1. On the wall 2 a pawl 5 is linked at. 6 which pawl engages a ratchet wheel 9 fixed on an arbor 10. The arbor 10 is rotatably mounted in the walls 7, 8. On the arbor 10 the one end of a strong coiled blade spring (not shown) is fixed'the other end of which is fastened to a barrel 11 which is provided with a toothed rim 12. The rim 12 is in mesh with a toothed gear 13 journaled on the back wall 8. The gear 18 drives by means of a toothed gear 14 an armature 15 rotatabl mounted in the walls 7 and 8. The armature 15 rotates between the poles 16, 17 of a magnet 18 arranged in the casing 1. On the armature there are two coils 19, 20 which are connected by insulated Wires to a lamp 21 mounted on the front wall 7 of the casing 1. On the back wall 8 of the casing 1 a retaining pawl 22 is arranged which engages the ratchet wheel 9, moreover there is fixed a pin 23 engaging a slot 24: in the side wall 2. Said slot 24 limits the movement of the side wall 2. On the back wall 8 a disk 25 is rotatably mounted through which the one end of the arbor 10 projects. On the disk 25 an arm 26 is hinged which arm is bent-otl' at 27. The free end of the arm 26 rests within a recess 28 arranged on the casing 1. The arm 26 is provided with a square hole 80 and the arbor 10 with a square head 32 which enters the hole 30 as soon as the arm 26 is brought in the position shown in Fig. 2 in dotted lines. Arm 26 is used for turning the arbor 10 and tensioning the spring at the same time it serves for fixing the lamp on a wall, etc. One or more sets of gears may be arranged between the barrel and the armature.
To make use of the lamp the spring 1s tensioned and the armature is set in rotation. The lamp is held in one hand and by-pressing the side wall 2 and the casing against each other the ratchet wheel is rotated and the spring re-tensioned.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A pocket lamp includin a casing comprising front, rear, upper, lower and side walls, one of said side walls being hingedly secured at its upper end adjacent the upper wall of the casing, a current generator for operating a lamp a spring motor including a winding shaft for driving said generator, and means for keeping such spring motor constantly operating, such means including a pawl and ratchet mechanism, the ratchet being mounted upon the winding shaft and the pawl having one of its ends ivoted to said hinged side wall, the other en engaging the said ratchet.
2. A pocket lamp including a casing comprising front, rear, upper ower and side walls, one of said side walls being hingedly secured at its upper end adjacent to the uper wall of the casing, a current generator or operating a lamp, 9. spring motor for driving said generator, means for keeping such spring motor constantly o crating, such means including a pawl an ratchet mechanism, the ratchet being mounted upon In testimony whereof I aflix my sig: the winding shaft and the awl having one ture in presence of two witnesses.
of its ends pivoted to said inged side wall, E KUHN FRE1 the other end engaging said ratchet, and re- 5 silient means engaging the hinged side Wall Witnesses:
for swingingthe lower end thereof to its out- CARL GUERIN, ermost position. BERTHA C. Gnoe.
