To all whom it may concern:
7 Be it known that I, HUBERT F. FRANKLIN,
. a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have mvented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Opening and Closing Doors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
In Letters Patent of the United'States No. 1,212,296 dated January 16, 1917, there are shown and described devices for opening and closing the doors of elevator shafts under the control of the operator when the car is at rest in position for the opening or closing, but actuated by a prime mover, such as an electric motor. In the devices shown and described in that patent provision was made not only for controlling the prime mover through a switch, but for controlling the opening and closing mechanism through a clutch interposed between the prime mover and the door operating mechanism. The present invention relates to devices of the same general character as those described in that patent, but it has for its object .to simplify the construction and especially-to avoid the necessity for a clutch between the prime mover and the door actuating mechanism, In accordance with the invention the movement of the prime mover, which brings about the movement of the doors to their fully opened position or their fully closed position, itself brings about the movement of the switch which interrupts the circuit of the motor and therefore brings the motor itself to rest; the completion of the motor circuit for the opening or the closing of thedoors being effected by the operator. The invention will be more fully explained herein- 'after with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which exhibits the improved devices in a perspective view, a ortion of the casing of the worm wheel being broken away to show the worm and worm wheel.

The doors a, a, of the elevator shaft, which are to be operated by the improved devices, are shown as center-closing doors, that is, doors in two parts or leaves which slide toward and from each other, meeting in a central. line when closed. It will be understood that the lever arrangement, by which the slides 0' are operated. will be varied to meet the requirements of use and particularly'the style of the doors to be operated, whether c enteropening or side-opening. .In the drawing the lever system is adapted for the operation of center-opening doors. Each slide 0 is engaged by a lever e which is preferably pivoted, as at c, on a link 0 which, in
turn, is pivoted upon one end of a bar 6 them to be slotted. Preferably the two levers c are connected .So that the two shall move simultaneously and to the same extent, although in opposite directions, when one of the lovers is actuated as. hereinafter explained; each lever e is connected by a link 6. with the corresponding end of a lever e which may be hung pivotally on the shaft of the worm wheel hereinafter mentioned, the arms of the lever being suitably proportioned in length with regard to the point of connection of the links 0* with the levers e, so that the two levers e shall'move equally or unequally as desired.
One of the levers e is connected by a link a with a crank pin e" carried by a diametrical arm 7 which is fixed on the shaft f of a worm wheel The latter is inclosed in a suitable casing g, mounted on the car, and is engaged by a worm g on the shaft g 'of an electric motor 9 The worm wheel 9 is driven in one direction, which is clockwise as shown, and is stopped automatically by breaking the circuit of themotor g at the end of every half rotation, when the double crank arm f is in a horizontal position, as
shown in the drawing. One half rotation thereby closing the doors a, a. The next half rotation of the crank arm f, from the position shown in the drawing, causes the levers e to swing apart and the doors a, a to open. The stopping of the prime mover g is effected automatically, as just stated. The starting of the prime mover, to effect the next half rotation of the crank arm and the next movement of the doors, is under the control of the operator, safety devices being provided to prevent such movement except when the car is in position to permit it.
The two branches of the circuit of the motor are shown as connected to two terminals, h, h, suitably mounted on the car. These two terminals, normally separated, may be connected electrically by a wiper switch or circuit closer h which is carried by an arm h on a shaft k The latter is adapted for both a vertical movement and a movement of oscillation, being mounted in suitable bearings it and pressed normally downward by a spiral spring h. At its upper end the shaft it carries an arm h which stands normally in the path of movement of the ends of the double crank arm f, so that as one end or the other approaches the arm 7& from below, the shaft h is lifted and the contact maker h is carried away from the. terminals 71,, h, breaking the circuit of the motor 9* and stopping the rota tion of the worm wheel 9 and the crank arm f. In order to complete the circuit of the motor the shaft 71/4 must be turned partially so that the arm b will swing ofl from the crank arm 7 and permit the shaft It to drop, under the pressure of the spring 71., and again bring the contact piece k in contact with the two terminals h, h. The rocking of the shaft h is effected by the operator. This is accomplished, in the construction shown in the drawing, by the following devices. The motor then starts and the worm wheel 9 moves through; 'another half rotation, opening or closing. the doors as the case may be. Through a spring, such as the spring 7t or another spring hereinafter mentioned the shaft h, as soon as the operators foot is removed from the pedal it, rocks to its originaeaim nal position, again bringing the arm it into the path of movement of the crank arm f, in readiness for another stopping action.
As a means to prevent the opening of the doors except when the operation of the door opening mechanism has been initiated by pressure on the pedal, one of the doors is provided with a pivoted latch m adapted to engage a pin m'on the other door. An arm 72" on the rock shaft is carries, at the end of a rod is, a plate 70 which, when the car is at rest at a floor, stands immediately behind the tail of the latch m. The mode of operation of the improved devices has been sufficiently explained in connection with the description of the construction and arrangement thereof and no further explanation is necessary. .It will be understood that various changes in details of construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention so far as such changes may be within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination of a prime mover, a stopping device therefor, a door, operating connections between the rime mover and the door, means actuate directly by the operating connections to operate the said stopping device, and means under the control of the operator to restore the stopping device to its initial position.
2. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination of a prime mover, a stopping device therefor, a crank arm operated by the rime mover, operating connections from t e crank arm to the door, means actuated directly by the movementof the crank arm to operate the stopping device to stop the prime mover, and means under the control of the operator to restore the stopping device to its initial position.
3. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination of a prime mover,
naeaiei of longitudinal and oscillating movement and havin an arm normally standing in the path 0 the crank arm, means to oscillate the shaft and means to move the shaft longitudinally in a direction opposite to that in which it is Moved by the crank arm..
4. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination of a prime mover, a stopping device therefor, a crank arm, operating connections from the crank arm to the door, a shaft in operative relation with the stopping device and having an arm in operative relation with the crank arm, and means under the control of the operator to restore the shaft and stopping device to initial position after movement by the crank arm.
5. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination of a prime mover, a stopping device therefor, a crank arm, operating connections from the crank arm to the door a shaft capable of longitudinal and oscillatory movement, an arm fixed on said shaft and normally standing in the path of the crank arm, a device for controlling the prime mover also carried by the' shaft, and means under the control of the operator for oscillating the shaft to disen-,
gage its arm from the crank arm.
6. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination of a prime mover, a stopping device therefor, a door, operating connections between the prime mover and the door, means actuated by the operating connections to operate said stopping device, means under the control of the oper-.

7. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination of a prime mover, a stopping device therefor, a door, operating connections between the prime mover and the door, means actuated by the operating connections to operate said stopping device, a rock shaft under the control of the operator operating connections between the rock shaft andthe stopping device to restore the stopping device to initial position, a latch to hold the door normally in closed position, and means operated by the rocking of the rock shaft to disengage said latch and release the door.
8; In a mechanism of the character described, the combination of a prime mover, a stopping device therefor, a door, operating connections between the rime mover and the door, a shaft capable o longitudinal and oscillatorymovement having an arm in operative relation to the stoppin device and an arm in operative relationwith said operating connections, a rock shaft under the control of the operator, and operatin connections between said rock shaft an said first named shaft. In a mechanism of the. character described, the combination of a rotatable shaft, a crank arm on said shaft, a door, a lever in operative relation with the door, a connection' between the crank arm and said lever, a shaft capable of longitudinal and oscillatory movement and having ,an arm normally in the path of said crank arm, a stopping device .in operative relation with said shaft,and means under the control of the operator to rock the shaft to disengage its arm from the crank arm.
