ROAD-GRADING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, MATTHIAS l). ZINDORF, a citizen of the United States, and a' resident of Seattle, in the county of King and State of l/Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roach Grading Devices, .of which the following is a full, true, and exact specification.
My invention relates to road grading machines and has for its principal objects; to provide improved means to keep the machine in its forward course in a predetermined direction; to provide adjustable draft means to limit the depth of the digging element; to provide adjustable means to limit the depthA of the digging element beneath the surface of the ground and to relieve the subsequent strain upon the machine; to provide an improved arrangement which assures the travel of the wheels on a prepared level surface; to provide novel means for the control of a guide tractor wheel; to provide novel means for relieving the strain on the mold board and generally assisting in controlling the machine; to generally improve the details of construction of a machine of the above general character. A further object is to provide a digging element having a vertical adjustment. @ther objects will appear as my invention is more fully described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings,` Figure 1 is a plan view of my machine with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1 with certain parts removed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section on line v -w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged inside elevation on line g/-g/ of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of a mold board on line z-z of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail of a tractor wheel.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, numeral 1 designatesr a land side having stitfening members 2 and 2a which secure said land side to a body 3 which is of general V shaped contour, as shown in Fig. 1, having an outstanding leg 3a. A shoe 4 is removably secured to the outer face of body 3 and may project slightly below the lower edge of said body. The said shoe has slotted holes 4a which allow a vertical movement of the rear part of the shoe, thereby depressing the forward or digging point 5 which projects hele-w the rest of the Patented Got. 22, 1918.

The leg 3' of body 3 has a longitudinally curved outer face which corresponds to a similarly curved mold board 6 which is hinged to leg 3Il at 7. The body 3 has a curved sharp cutting member 8 attached thereto. The mold board 6 is disposed at an acute angle relative to land side 1 and adjustably braced therefrom by a brace 9 which is hinged to the mold board 6 at 9, the other endof brace 9 is hinged to a bracket 10 which supports a toothed tractor wheel 11 and is secured to brace members 2 and 2 which are offset at 2b and 2C respectively. The teeth of tractor wheel 1l project somewhat below the bottom of brace member 2a and are adapted to dig into the ground and assist in holding land side 1 in a true course and prevents skidding sidewise under the unbalanced resistance of the earth against the mold board. That portion of the land side and the stiifening member 2a which is below line A, in Fig. 3,also projects into the earth and assists in holding the machine in proper alinement. A toothed wheel 12 having a eoncaved face is located near the rear end of land side l and serves a similar purpose to that of wheel 1. A pilot wheel 13 has bearing in a fork 13a which has vertical adjusting means relatively to a supporting yoke 14 which eX- tends forwardly from body 3 and is in line with land side 1. The wheel 13 runs upon the ground ahead of the digging point 5 and thereby limits the depth of the said digging point below the surface of the ground. As 'the earth is loosened by the digging member 5 it is forced in a lateral direction ry mold board 6, which may be adjusted to suit the conditions of operation as previously mentioned. by brace 9. A cutting edge 6a on the mold board also loosens up Y additional earth in the path of the said mold board, which forces the earth laterally.
rThe depth of cut to be taken by the mold board 6 is regulated oy an adjustable elevating'wheel 1F which is mounted in a laterally swinging fcrlr 16. The fork 16 may be elevated or depressed by means of a lever 17 which is pivoted at 18 to mold board 6. Link 19. and hand lever 20, which is pivoted to mold board 6 at 20, operate lever 17. Hand lever 20 has the usual quadrant 21 and latch If the wheel 15 is depressed thereby raising the rear of mold board 6, the cut of said mold board is lightened and vice versaa .en adjustable rod is fastened to one end ci' mold board 6 and the other end to a drait rig yoke 2li. Yoke 9A is secured to an extension bar which is loosely bolted to body 3 at 26. @ther corresponding holes 2l' are provided in body 3 and bar 25 which allow,- the attaching bolt 26 to be moved to other holes, thereby changing the point ot attachment ot the drait rig in such a manner as to cause the digging point 5 to either dig deeper or shallower as desired. Yoke :2e is provided with holes 28 and 29 which a tongue 8O is bolted by bolts 28a and 29a respectively. lt will be understood that the tongue 30 may be bolted to any pair or" holes and 'i9 and thus may stand in line with or at an angle with land side l as desired. ldy changing the location ot the tongue the point et pull is varied, thereby partly compensating tor the unbalanced torce caused by the earth pressing against the mold board which force tends to make the rear end or the machine skid toward the land` side. When it is desired to travel with the machine, the wheel l5 is thrown down to is lowest position thereby raising the rear ot mold board 6 clear ot the groundand the trailer wheel 3l, which is mounted in a yoke 32 and which in turn is pivotally mounted in socket lever 33, is lowered by said lever 33 and connecting hand lever 3d. 'Lever 33 is ulcrumed at 35 and is held in guides 86 which prevent. lateral motion of said lever. A wedge shaped block 37 which is thinner at'one side than the other serves to hold yoke 32 in a tore and att position, as shown in Figi l, when in the raised position, and to right said yoke into this position as the wheel is raised by means ot' the said yoke striking against the sloping tace of block 37 and thereby being' straightened up as shown. Block 3? is secured to land side l. Trlandlerer Sil is pivoted at 38 to a support 39 from land side l and is provided with a latch e0, and quadrant il similar to hand lever 20. Traction wheel 3l may also be used to assist in limiting or regulating the depth ot out to Vbe made by the plow by being lowered until it rolls along, on the euri-'ace ofthe nished ground. lt will be noted that when the machine is moving arth, the wheels ll, l2, 16 and 3l all travel upon the previously prepared or graded surface or the ground, thereby maintaining :themes the machine in true plane. lt will be understood that by means of the afore mentioned adjustments, the depth oit digging of either end of mold board 6 and digging point 5 may be regulated by the operator as the machine is being drawn over the ground by any motive power. Also that earth may be moved 'from high points and dropped in lower ones by the operation of the moldV board with my machine. Any desired crown or slope ot road may be :termed by varying the depths of the various digging elements ot the machine.

tastening means passing through the slots to the lshapedftrame, said slots permitting of the tilting ot the forward end ot the point with reference to the `land side, a mold board hinged to the acutely disposed member of the kJ-shaped trame, an adjustable brace between the mold board andtheV skeleton trame, a yoke secured to the upperwfpart of the if-shaped trame, a brace extending from the yoke to the rear end of the moldfboard, wheel mounted at therear end of the mold board, and a system ot levers on the mold ioard for raising and lowering the wheel to tilt the torward end ot the point.
