To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHAN HILLMER LAR- NELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kersey, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Shields, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in shields for ordnance and its object is to provide an improved shield designed especially for military use, and which may be readily moved from place to place upon the battle field and which will serve as protection for an army against infantry or cavalry attacks of the enemy. A further object is to provide a wheeled shield that will serve as protection for one or two men and that may be readily transported from place to place by its users.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which-- from the front plate.
Figure 1 is a top plan v1ew of my improved shield.
Fig. 2 is a view of Fig. 1 in side elevation.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the interior of the shield illustrating the wicket employed.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view illustrating the adjustable supports for the shield employed.

My improved shield comprises the vertical side plates 1, inclined side plates 2, vertical front plate 3, inclined front plate 4: andv the roof plate 5 which slopes downwardly The plates 2 and a are formed with a plurality of portholes 6 which may be entirely or partly closed by the wickets 7 pivotally secured to the interior of the plates 2 and 4: and which are adapted to be manually controlled by the shield operator. An angular base 8 is secured to the lower edge of the plates 1 and 3 and in the lowered position of said plates, as shown in Fig. 4:, said base will rest upon the ground. To the front plate 3 the plates 9 are secured which carry the perforated segments 10 adapted to receive the pins 11 of the arms 12 Specification of Letters Patent.

that carry the supporting front wheels 13, said arms 12 being connected by pivots 14 to horizontal fingers 15 carried by the said plates 9. By moving the arms 12 to or away from the front plate 3 it is obvious the shield israised or lowered, and it may be adjusted in any position desired by connecting the arms 12 and segments 10 by the pins 11.
To the side plates 1 the braces 16 are secured which are connected to braces 17 to which a yoke 18 is secured in an elongated slot 19 of which the ends of the axle 20 of wheel 21 are disposed, said yoke 18 also earrying a plate 22 to which one end of a brace 23 is secured, said brace being also secured to the roof 5 to support the same. In use the soldiers or operators using the shield may insert their rifles in the portholes to pick 01f the enemy when in action, said portholes being also used for observation purposes, Fig. 3 showing one porthole partly opened for this purpose. The shield in use is raised off the ground as shown in Fig. 2 and is then readily pushed over the field by its users.
What is claimed is 1. In a shield, vertical side plates connected by a vertical front plate, a roof plate, inclined side and front plates connecting said roof plate and the said vertical side and front plates, said inclined plates being formed with portholes, wickets for said portholes, supporting wheels, and means connecting said wheels and said vertical front plate whereby the latter may be raised or lowered relative to the ground line.
2. In a shield, vertical side plates con nected by a vertical front plate, a roof plate,
inclined side and front plates connecting said roof plate and the said vertical side and front plates, said inclined plates being formed with portholes, wickets for said portholes, supporting means for the structure, said means including a pair of front wheels, connection between said front wheels and said front plate whereby said front wheels may be moved toward and away from said front plate to raise and lower the same.
