Description

GEORGE M. wooDwARD. Water-Hemer and Steam --Generators- Patented Juner18,v1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
GEORGE M. WOODWARD, OF NEW` YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-HEATERS ANDLSTEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,086, dated June 18,1872.
Speciiication describing a new and useful Improvement in Water-Heater and Generator, invented by GEORGE M. WooDwARD, of the city, county, and State of New York.
This invention relates to apparatus for heatingbuildin gs by water circulations or by steam, and for generating steam tor all purposes; and consists in a chamber of two compartments and a series of water-tubes arranged in pairs, each pair being connected by a return-chamber and arranged in a iire-boX or arch, substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of the apparatus taken on the line x w of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan View, partly in section, as on the line y y of Fig. l. Fig. 3'is a vertical section of Fig. l on the line z z.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This heater and generator is composed of the double water-chamber A and a series of double tubes, C, one within the other, the parts of eachtube being connected together at one end by return-chambers D. Their other ends are connected with the water-chamber A. B is a vertical partition, which divides the waterchamber into two compartments, marked E and F. G is an inner water-tube, and H the outer water-tube, which form one of the series of double tubes O. There may be more or less in number of these double tubes, according to the purpose for which the generator or heater is intended. The return-chamber D screws onto the outer tube H. This chamber has a broken partition, I, by which the inner tube G is supported, as seen in Figs. l and 3. The other end of the tube G passes through the partition B, connecting with the compartment E, and is supported in a position central with the outer tube by these two partitions I and v B. The outer tube H passes through the wall of the water-chamber A andconnects with the compartment F thereof. J is the {ire-grate.
In the application of this apparatus to the heating of buildings the Water is made to circulate, as indicated by the arrows, K being the induction and L the eduction pipe. These pipes are arranged so that two or more of these heaters or generators may be connectedplaced one above the other. In this manner its size and capacity may be increased to any desired extent. d
M is the annular space, through which the water is returned from each of the returnchambers D. -The heat and gaseous products of combustion pass upward and surround these tubes, each outer tube being heating or generating surface.
In applying the apparatus as a steam-generator the pipe L is connected with a drum, not shown in the drawing, 'from which the steam is taken. The apparatus is placed (in whole orlin part) in a properly-constructed arch, the double tubes being supported thereby and by each other, preferably in an inclined position.
I do not limit or conine myself to the precise form or arrangement of any of the parts described, as they may be varied in many ways without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The water-chamber A, connected substantially as described, in combination with the tubes G and H and return-chamber D, when the same are arranged to operate as and for the purposes described.
2. The annular space m and returnchamber D, combined in a water-heater or steam-generator, as described.
3. The induction-pipe K and the eductionpipe L, in combinationwith the compartments E and F, as and for the purposes described.
4. The combination of the compartments E F with the tubes G H, as shown and described.
5. The partition I in the return-chamber, as and for the purposes described.
GEORGE M. WOODWARD.
