specification of Letters Patent. "Patented '24:, 191
Application filed October 6, 1917. Serial No. 195,166.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. Somme, a citizen- ,of the United States, residing at Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in- Vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a
This invention relates to. boxes or receptacles, and it has special reference to cons tainers that are constructed in such manner as to display to view a slip, bearing the name, address or other legend. V
The invention is particularly intended for use in delivering laundry although it is capable of generaluse as a container for articles of most any description. It isoommon practice in laundries to place the .finished work in boxes Whichare tied up by passing string in both directions around the box, after which slips or. bills bearing the or receptacle to which a slip or bill may be readily attached in such manner that it, is practically impossible to accidentally displace it, and which is, at the same time, exposed to view so that any legend thereon shall be immediately and-clearly visible.
Another object of the invention is-to pro vide afolding or otherwise constructed box of the above-indicated character which may be tied up with'relatively little labor and expense, and which shallrequire anexceedingly small amountv of string.
To these ends the invention contemplates a folding or otherwise fashioned box comprising a cover portion that is adapted'to fit ,over and close a body portion. in a wellknownmanner. One of the side members of the cover portion is provided with a recess of suitable form to display to viewa part of a slip or bill, which is held in position between the adjacent interfitting parts of the body and cover portions. The component portions of the box are held together by means of suitab'le fastening devices that are associated therewith, in conjunction with a short piece of string,.or thelike, which may, as the occasion may require, also serve to secure the exposed slip or bill firmly in position. 7
Other objects-of the invention, and fea tures of construction by which they are at tained, will be readily apparent from the following description and illustrated embodiments of the invention. In its broader aspects, the invention is not restricted to the specific structural details and arrangement and location of parts set forth, and 7 many modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Therefore, only such limitations should be imposed as are indicated'in the appended claims. I
The preferred embodiments of the inven; tion are illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which; Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of an open boxconstructed in accordance with the invention ;,-Fig. 2 is avieW in elevation of one end of the box shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of one end of a'box of modified construction;
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the box shown tom 12 and upwardlyprojecting' side and end members-1 1, 16, and 18,.and a cover portion 20, having atop 22 anddownWa-rdly projecting side and end member's r24c, 26, 28
these portions of the box may be entirely separate, in which case no hinge connection will .be embodied therein. I, r
The end member 30 of the cover portion 20 which is remote from the hinge connection is somewhat more narrow than the side members'2 l and 26 and is provided with an open-sided recess 34:, for the purpose of displaying to view a slip or bill 36 that may be placed over the upper edge of the end member 18 of the body portion, which slip is held in position between the adjacent cooperating end members 18 and 30, when the box is closed. Upon the slip or bill 36, a name and address, or any other legend, may be written, and said slip may be so positioned as to render' this legend visible through the recess 84. The corner portions 38 and 40 of the end member 30 are rounded to prevent bending or mutilation by reason of catching upon other objects.
A plurality of fastening devices 42 and 14 are attached to the end member 30 of the cover portion and are located near the upper corners thereof, while a fastening device 46 is provided at substantially the middle of the lower part of the end member. 18 of the body portion. These fastening devices may conveniently comprise a disk 4E8 of suitable sheet material, which is riveted to the box, or is secured thereto by an eyelet 50, in accordance with well-known practice. 'A string or cord 52 is attached to the fastening device 42 and is adapted to engage or be wound around the fastening devices A6 and 44. Thus, the component portions of the box are held together, and the string or cord is so angularly positioned with respect to the slip or bill 36 that it also serves to firmly secure the same in position and prevent itsaccidental displacement. The relative locations of the fastening devices 42, 4:4: and 4L6 are preferably so chosen that the string or cord 52 passes over the corner portions 88 and 40 of the cover, whereby said corners are held flat against the end member 18 of the body portion of the box.
If desired, the end member 30 of the cover portion of the box may be provided with a rectangular recess or opening 56, as shown in Fig; 3, in lieu of the open-sided recess disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2. Moreover, the positions of the fastening devices may be varied, a fastening device 58 being located above the opening 56 and in substantially the middle of the upper part ofthe end member 30, and fastening devices 60 and 62 being disposed at the respective lower corners of said end member, as shown in Fig. 3.
Although the construction of the box and the arrangement of the fastening means illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 is considered the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that the location of the fastening devices may be similar to that'illustrated in Fig. 3. Moreover, the box shown in Fig. 3 mayhave its fastening devices located similarly to those of Figs. 1 and 2. Furthermore, the location of the'recess is not necessarily restricted to the end member 18, but any side or end member of the cover portion may be provided with such a recess. Various other modifications may also be effected within the spirit of the invention.
Having set forth the nature and scope of the present invention, and the preferred embodiments thereof having been illustrated and described, that which is claimed as new is:
