The present invention relates, to organ blowers and has for its,objectto provide a blower, especially adapted for use on organs located in churches or like places where especially desirable to muffle any noise created by the blower.

With these objects in view the inventionconsists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of'construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the inven tion. 1

In general my organ bloweris constructed in accordance with Patent No. 1,117,605, which was issued frame member 1, the motor 2 and fan motor shaft 3and fans 45 are all of similar construction to that illustrated in'my-patent above referred to. The casing in which are mounted the fans I now construct in the form of acylindrical drum having a straight wall 5 on the side next. to the motor and a substantially conicalwall 6' upon the opposite side, a'bracket 7 fixed to the conical wall 6 supports the bearing'8, for the end opposite the motor, of the drive shaft 3.
As shown in Fig.2 I construct my air intake compartment in the form of a cylinder generally indicated at 10, which fits snugly over a collar llproj ecting from the end wall 6 of the fan casing. .An opening 12in the outside end of the air intake is provided to the with a fine mesh wire'screen or other suit-' able material for preventing dust from being carried into the fan and being blown up through the organ pipes. This aperture is of larger dianleter than the shaft 3 for the purpose of allowing adjustment'of the fan blade with relation. to the motor and I, therefore, provide a packing member to form an air tight joint around the said shaft 3 to prevent the escape of air from the fan casing through the aperture 20. This packing member consists of a sheet metal plate 21, substantially square in blank form and with a depending portion 22 clearly shown in Fig. 6. Upon the inner face of the sheet metal plate I place a square of leather 23 which is slightly smaller in dimensions than the metal plate. The corners of the plate are then bent at an angle of 45 to its edges as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 6 and clearly shown in the perspective view. These inturned corners 24: are pressed down upon the face of the leather member and the points thereof are then turned in as shown at 25 and serve to secure the leather member upon the plate 21. The bottom depending portion 22 is then turned up and the joints 26 between said portion and the adjoining portions 24 is soldered to form a water. tight joint. This forms a well clearly shown in Fig. 4 and indicated at 27 for the purpose to be hereinafter pointed out. A central opening 28 formed in the leather portion is adapted to fit snugly about'the drive shaft 3, thereby forming an air tight packing. Upon the opposite side of the metal plate 21 is cemented or secured in other suitable manner a piece of felt 29 conforming in outline with the plate 21 after the corners thereof have been turned down. A frusto-conical flange is formed upon the plate 21 having. a central opening 30 which registers with the opening 28 formed in the leather portion. An opening 31 is also formed in the felt portion and fits about the frusto-conical flange on the plate 21. The lubricant placed in the well 27 will be absorbed by the leather portion and will thereby'keep it saturated, thereby causing it to be soft and flexible and at all I times fit snugly about the shaft 3. A flexible suspending member 32 is pivotally attached to the upper part of the metal plate 21 and extends in an inclined direction from a vertical line drawn through the center of said plate, where it is pivotally attached to the fan casing wall 5. By this construction any vertical or horizontal variation in the movement of the shaft 3 caused by the disalinement of said shaft due to the ordinary wear on the bearings thereof will permit the packing member to move with the shaft,
the pressure of the air within the fan casing at all times holding the felt portion 28' tightly against the end wall 5. By reason of the fact that I suspend the packing member upon a flexible support disposed at an angle to the vertical axis of the shaft 3 no direct end thrust can be brought upon the flexible member causing it to buckle and force the packing member away from the wall 5. It will be readily seen that by reason of the pivotal connection between the suspension member, packing member and the wall 5, the packing member i free to move in any direction at the same time keeping the'felt portion 29 constantly in contact with the wall 5. Should there at any time be end play in the shaft 3 due to wear in the motor or bearing 8 the leather member enclreling said shaft in close con-. tact therewith and secured to said rigid member, means within the said rigid member for lubricating said flexible member, flexible means adapted to secure said packing against rotation with said shaft but permitting the said packing eccentric movement in any direction with said shaft.

A packing adapted to surround a rotat ing shaft comprising a square of metal in blank form, an integral portion depending from said square in blank form, an opening formed centrally of said square of metal, a frusto-conical flange formed about said opening and adapted to encircle said rotating shaft in spaced relation thereto, a square of leather of smaller dimension than said metal square upon one side of said metal square, the corners of said metal being adapted to be bent into engagement with said leather to secure said leather upon said metal, a central opening in said leather adapted to fit snugly aboutsaid shaft to form an air tight contact therewith, the said lug upon said blank square being adapted to be bent upwardly to form in conjunction with the two adjacent inturned corners of said square, a reservoir for containing a lubricant for said leather, a wall arranged at right angles to said shaft and intersecting said shaft, an aperture formed in said wall through which the said shaft is designed to extend, a felt member securedblank form, an integral portion depending from said rectangular blank form, an opening formed centrally in said blank form, a frusto-conical flange formed about said 5 opening and adapted. to encircle said rotating shaft in spaced relation thereto, a sheet of fibrous material of smaller dimension than said metal form, the corners of said metal being adapted to be bentinto engagement with said fibrous material to secure 1 said fibrous material upon said metal.
