Patenteddune 11,1872..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OHARLESM. JORDAN, OF STILLWATER, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNOB-LATCH ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,773, dated June 11, 1872.
.door-knob lock. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line :c x, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved door-knob lock or fastening, which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, enabling the lock to be easily and quickly locked, so as to prevent opening the door from the outside. The invention consists in a sliding knob, provided with a lug upon the inner end of its shank and a slot in the side of its shank, combined'with a rose provided lwith a groove in its socket, and with washer, pin, and spindle, as hereinafter described.
A represents a door-frame; B, a door; 0,.
` the lock-case; and D, the spring-catch, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new. E is the knob-spindle, which is passed through the door B and case O, and operates the catch D in the ordinary manner. F is a pin, which is passed through the spindle E at the inner side of the case O, a washer being interposed between the said pin and case, ii' desired. G is a washer placed upon the spindle E upon the inner side of the pin F, and which, when the spindle E is drawn inward,
- strikes against the socket-ilange of the rose E. The socket of the rose H has a groove,
h formed in one side to receive a lu il,
formed upon the side of the end of the shank of theinner knob I. In the side of the knob I is formed a slot, i2, through which passes the screw J, that secures the knob I to the spindle E. K is the outer knob, which is secured to the outer end of the spindle E in the ordinary manner. The groove h and lug i should be so arranged as to be opposite each other when the door is shut. By this construction, by pulling the knob I outward when the door is shut the lug i will be drawn into the groove h', which will effectually prevent the spindle from being turned, while at' the same time the pin F and washer G will prevent the spindle from being moved longitudinally, so that it will be impossible to open the door from the outside. The inner ,end of the rose-socket has a groove formed around its inner edge, through which the lug i moves when the knob I is pushed in, allowing the spindle to be turned by either the outer or inner knob.
Having thus described` my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The sliding knob I, provided with a lug, il, upon the inner end of its shank, and a slot, i2, in the side of the shank, in combination with the rose H, provided with a groove, h', in its socket, and with the washer G, pin F, and spindle E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES M. JORDAN.
