The operator first positions a slide in the seat 11 in the frame 10.

' He thereupon adjusts the several shutters with the mat blank 23` in position 15 acrossthe face of the slide to determine the exact exposure field 16 for the latter. After this field hasy been determined, the slide is removed and the cutting block 18, thereon,

is yplaced in the seat'll and the mat cut along the edges of the shutters 15. Itis obvious that upon the removal of the cut mat from the block 18, the exact lield 16 which the operatordesired, has been cut from ythe mat and the latter may be at once adjusted upon and secured to the slide in well known manner. i j v f Y n Obviously if it is not desired to cut the mat on the` block 18, it may be marked with apencil which in this event, would be guided along the edge'of the shutters 15 to indicate the field 16 upon the mat blank. The'latter would thenbe removed from the block 18 to Y a cutting board or the like and cut out along the marked lines.V .Y j V ne obvious advantage of the present device is that the use of ruledmats is entirely unnecessary. Any opaque paper of proper size may be placed upon the cutting block andcut or marked in accordance with the field 16 outlined by the shutters. The old uncertain practice of guessing at the field or measuring it out by rule is entirely replaced by tie present much speed/ier andv certain operation ofadjustmg the shutters' directly with relation to the slide to obtain the' desired artistic effect, and then cutting' or marking the mat blank directly from the field ,so outlined by the shutters. . The invention has been described with special relation to the cutting of mats for standard size lantern slides. Obviously it may be employed however for mattingk pictures, or plates of any size if the frame and cutting block are made of suitable size or adjustable to various sizes. The precise construction of the frame shown may be variously modified to give added strength or lightness or to improve the means for holding the plate, cutting block etc. without departing from what I claim as my invention.

A matting device of the character described, comprising an apertured frame having a seat for temporarily supporting an image bearer at the vframe aperture,` and shutters adjustable across said frame aperture to determine the desired exposure fiel for the image, in combination with a cutting block adapted to carry a mat blank and placeable in the said seat after the removal of the image bearer, together With a metallic cutting face on said block.

A matting device of the character described, comprising an apertured frame having a seat for supporting an image bearer at the frame aperture, and a surrounding seat for a sheet of ground glass, and shutters adjustable across the frame aperture Copies yof this patent may be obtaine for ve cents each,

7. A matting device ofthe character described, comprising an apertured frame havtemporarily supporting an image bearer at the frame aperture, and
