CHARLES C. REMO, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BED-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 13, 1918.
Application filed January 31, 1918. Serial No. 214,733.
To all whom it may, concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. RnMo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain" new and useful Improvements in Bed-Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in bed attachments and has particular reference to an adjustable bracket adapted to be supported by one of the bed posts and carrying a table or other support adjustable into (3011-. venient reach of a patient in the bed.
An object of the invention is to provide an attachment of this character which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efiective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the attachment showing the same applied to a bed 0st. p Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the manner of securing the table in horizontal position.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a clamping member employed in connection with the invention.
Fig. 6 is a similar view of another clamping member.
In the drawing the numeral 10 indicates a bed post to which is adapted to be secured upper and lower clamps consisting of plates 11 and 12 which receive the bed post therebetween and which are secured thereto by means of small bolts 13. The plate 12 of each clamp has extending laterally therefrom a curved arm 14 and the free ends of said arms are provided with openings through which a vertically disposed rod 15 is extended, the lower end of said rod being screw threaded as indicated at 16.
Associated with the rod 15 is a clamping or retaining memb'er 17 formed of a single length of resilient material bent into the substantially U-shaped formation and provided adjacent its free endswith openings 18 for receiving said rod. Thebight portion 19 of the member 17 is provided with an enlarged opening 20 through whichextends adjacent ends of the supporting arms 21 arranged in parallel superposed relation and having their ends flattened as at 22 and provided with openings 23 for receiving the rod 15. Said ends of the arms 21 are preferably disposed on each side of the end of the arm 14 carried by the lower clamp and are also adjusted between the free ends of the clamping members 17. It will thus be seen that the arms 21 are pivotally connected to the rod 15 and in order to secure said arms in any adjusted position, a wing nut 24 is mounted upon the thread 16 of the rod 15 and engaged with the lower side of the clamping member 17. When the nut is tightened against said side the same will tightly engage the end of the lower arm 21 which will in turn bind against the arm 14 and in this manner will prevent turning of said arms 21.
The other ends of the arms 21 preferably have interposed therebetween the adjacent end of a horizontally adjustable table supporting arm 25 spaced from the ends of the arms 21 by means of washers 26 and pivotally connected to said arms by a vertically disposed bolt 27. A diagonally extending brace 28 has one end connected to said bolt and its other end to the upper end of said rod 15. The arm 25 is preferably hollow and receives therein the rod 29 to the outer end of which is secured a table or other support 30, the inner end of the rod having an elongated opening 31 which registers with the similarly formed slots 32 intermediate the ends of the arm 25 when the table is in a horizontal position. In order to retain said table in this position and prevent turning thereof about the longitudinal axis of the arm 25 a key 33 is inserted into the opening 31 and slots 32 and said key is connected to the brace 28 by means of a flexible element 34. From this description it will be apparent that the arms 21 may be swung about the rod 15 to any desired position and that the arm 25 and consequently the table 30 may be adjusted to an operative position Within convenient reach of a patient in a bed and also inoperative position alongside of the bed.
What is claimed is An attachment of the class described comprising clamps adapted to be secured to a bed post and including supporting'arnis, a vertically disposed rod extending through said arms, a clamping member of substantially U-shaped formation. associated With said rod and disposed in a horizontal position the sides of said member having openings through which said rod extends and the bight portion hating an enlarged opening therein, supporting arms extending through said enlarged opening and between the sides of said clamping member and pivotally connected tosaid rod on each side of the arm of one of the first named clamps, means on said rod and engaging said clamping memher for retainingthe last named supporting arms in horizontally disposed positions, a brace connecting said last named supporting arms with the upper end of said vertically disposed rod, and a table supported by the opposite ends of said last named arms.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
CHARLES C. REMO. Vitnesses SALVATORE FAoLIsI,
FRED RENGLINo.
