To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE T. BoYLAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing-at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented `a new and Improved Incorrect-Position Indicator, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of devices that are employed to denotewhen a person is assuming an incorrect position, and especially as regards the position necessary for correct breathing, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a device of this class that may be conveniently worn and that will be particularly sensitive in denoting any materia-l departureV or movement from a correct position ofthe person wearing the device.
One form of indicator embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved indicator.

In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 indicates shoulder straps, made of any suitable lleXib-le material and provided with any desired means, as buckles, for attaching the ends together, these straps being made to extend from the back of the wearer over the shoulders to the front, and of a length to support a girdle 6 constructed to extend around the body underneath the arms, this girdle being provided with any suitable means,fas a buckle, for securing it in place. A case 7 of any suitable form and material is secured to the girdle G and incloses the indica-ting mechanism.
A post `8 secured to the base plate 9 of the case has a gear 10 rotatably mounted thereon, this gear having a pinion 11 rigidly connected therewith, the teeth of which mesh with a rack lever 12 attached to the base by a pivot 46. lA bar 13 is pivotally connected tothe lever 12 and to a frame 14,
the latter receiving one end of an actuatingstrap 15 extending through an opening 1n the wall of the case and attached at its outer end to a buckle 16 or other means-for securing 4one end of the girdle. The strap 15 passes over an idley roll 17 rotatably motmted between ears 47 projecting from the base 9. Springs 18 hold the frame 14 at one limit of its zone of movement. y
The gear 10 meshes with a pinion 19 rotatably mounted on a post 48 extending from the base 9, said pinion having a gear 20 rigidly connected therewith and meshing with an indicator gear 21, the latter having an indicator hand 22 rigidly connected therewith and operating in connection with a graduated dial 23 to denote the degree of movement of the indicating hand.
The gear 20 carries a contact stud 24 positioned to strike either of the arms 25 of a forked Contact 26. -These arms are adjustable one with respect to `another as by means of a screw 27 having a head with a beveled under surface t-o engage'between the arms and force them apart against the pullof a spring 28.
The contact 26 is mounted on a base 29 located on a block 30 of insulating material, a conductor 31 extending from the base 29 to the base 32 of an audible signal, as a buzzer 33, said buzzer being connected by a conductor 34 with a spring conductor 35 supportedon a ypost 36 composed of insulating material or separated from the base by such material.
The conductor 35 is held, by its resilient action, in contact with one terminal 37 connected with one pole of a battery 38, the other pole of which is connected with a terminal 39 that is in contact with, a conducting post 40 that'serves as a means of grounding the battery'. From this construction it will be noted that the terminal 39 is electrically connected with the vstud 24 on the gear 20, this through' the base 9 and post on which the gear 20 is mounted, and as soon as said stud 24 strikes either of the contact arms the electrical circuit is completed.
A spring clip 41 is secured to the base and is formed to partially envelopthebattery 38 and hold it in place. A cover 42 is hinged to the front wall of the case, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, and a catch 43 of any suitable form and construction is provided to hold the cover in its closed posif tion, in which position the battery will be retained with its terminals touching theconcorrectly it is important that the body shall be erect and the shoulders thrown back, and it has been found that this erect position is of great importance in treating the affliction of stammering or stutter-ing. My invention seeks to provide a device that shall give notice when the wearer has assumed an imperfect position and also to denote when the breathing is imperfect.
To secure these results my improved device is adjusted around the body just underneath the arms, the end of the strap 15 being drawn through the buckle to cause the device to lit quite close when the person is in proper position as to the shoulders. 'Ihe parts are so arranged that when the strap 15, which in fact forms a part of the girdle, is drawn to the proper extent the stud 2-1 will be located about midway between the arms As the person breathes, when this is thus adjusted, the stud 2J: will oscillate between the arms without touching them and in order that this oscillation may be to a greater or lesser extent to accommodate different ranges of breathing in different persons, the adjusting screw 27 is provided so that the arms may be separated or brought closer together.
Should the person wea-ring the device allow his shoulders to move forward and the chest to be depressed, the strap 15 will be drawn inwardly by the springs 1S and through the connecting mechanism the rack bar 12 will operate the several pinions and gears and the stud 24; will be moved into contact with one of the arms 25 whereupon the signal will be sounded and the person will be notified that he has assumed an incorrect position.
Likewise in breathing, should the inhalations and eXhalations become irregular, that is too great or too little and not regular, the contact stud 2st will be thrown against one of the arms 25, depending upon whether the inhalation or eXhalation is in excess, and the alarm will be sounded and the person will thus be notified of an abnormal condition with respect to his body.
The visual signal including the hand 22 and dial 23 is operated through the gearing hereinbefore described and b v means of this visual signal an attendant, having charge of the patient wearing the device, may observe the conditions as to breathing or abnormal position of the shoulders without the patient being conscious of such observation.
A cut-out is provided to break the electrical circuit when the device is unattached to a person and the strain is, therefore, removed from the strap 15 and the stud 2st is consequently in electrical contact with one of the arms 25. In the construction herein shown a cut-out slide di is mounted on the wall of the case in position for its beveled end to engage the terminal39 and force` it from electrical contact with the conductor 40. A knob 45 is provided wherewith to operate said slide and the knob and slide will be constructed to provide suiiicient friction to hold the slide in any position to which it may be moved.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means.
I claim:
l. An indicating device including a base, an indicator mounted on the base, a controlling member movably mounted on the base and normally disconnected from said indicator, means for connecting said controller and indicator, and a girdle' comprising a part movably attached to the base and operatively connected with said controlling member to actuate it.
2. An indicating device including a base, an indicator mounted on the base, a controlling member movably mounted on the base to control operation of said indicator, means connected with the indicator and located for engagement by the controlling member in its movement in opposite directions, and a girdle comprising a part movably mounted on the base and operatively connected with said controlling member.
3. An indicating device including a base, an indicator mounted on the base, a forked member connected with the indicator to effeet operation thereof, a controlling member mounted for movement in opposite directions between the arms of the forked member, and a girdle comprising a member movably mounted on the base and operatively connected with said controlling member to effect movement thereof.
4. An indicating device including a base, indicators of different character mounted on the base, .actuating means for said indicators, and a girdle including a member movably attached to the base and mechanically connected with said indicators.
5. An indicating device including a case, a battery, conductors positioned in the case to be engaged by terminals of said battery, means for positioning the battery in the case for engagement of said terminals and conductors, an indicator located within the case and operatively connected with said conductors, an actuating device, and means for connecting said indicator with said actuating device.
