REGISTER-FAN.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GREEN B. WVILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nevada, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Register-Fan, of which the following is a specification.
By way of explanation it may be stated that the air in the fines of a hot air heater frequently becomes cold, notably during'the night time, when the fire is permitted to die down. The foregoing observation is partieularly true in connection with the long fiues of a hot air heater. If the cold air above mentioned can be removed from the flues, a proper circulation will be secured,
than would otherwise be the case, if the fire is started up.
In view of the foregoing, one object of the present invention is to provide a portable frame adapted to be placed upon or against the register of a hot air heater, the frame carrying a fan whereby cold air in the flue leading to the register may be sucked out.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the structure may be adapted either to a horizontal or to a vertical register.
A further object of the invention is to improve the supporting frame of the fan and to improve the means whereby the fan is driven.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in vertical transverse section, a device constructed in accordance with thepresent invention, parts appearing in elevation and the structure being placed on a horizontal or floor register;

Fig. 2 is an elevation wherein the structure is shown in cooperation with a vertical or wallregister.
- The numeral 1 denotes a base plate carrying a tubular sleeve 2. The numeral 3 marks, generally, a frame, comprising a side i post 4, a side post 5 and an end bar 6, the frame being of substantially U-shape. The numeral 7 denotes an arm disposed against the-post4 and of greater height than the frame 3. The base plate l-may include a tongue 8 extended between the lower end of the arm 7 and the post 4. A securing element 9 unites the arm 7, the tongue 8, the post 4 and the sleeve 2. The arm 7 may be attachechfurther, as shown at 14, to the post 4 above the sleeve 2. I The sleeve 2 is attached as shown at 10 to the side post 5. The numeral 11 denotes a support located atthe upper or outer end of the arm 7 and attached thereto by hinges 12.
r A casing 15 is attached as shown at 16 to the end bar 6 of the frame 3 and includes a socket 17 in which is located a shaft 18 received at one end in a thrust bearing 19 constituting a part of the casing 15. A cap 20 is threaded on the end of the socket 18 and cooperates with a disk 21 on the shaft 18 to prevent the shaft from moving endwise. A fan 22 is secured to the exposed end of the shaft 18 and operates in the sleeve 2. The shaft 18 carries a worm 23 meshing into a worm wheel 24 located in the casing 15 and secured to a shaft 25 journaled in the casing, the shaft 25 being rotated by means of a crank 26 or otherwise.
Although the specific driving means for the fan 22, as above described, will be found useful, any other suitable means for rotating the fan may be provided.
In practical operation, the base plate 1 is placed on a horizontal register 27 mounted as usual in a floor 28. The shaft 25 is rotated by means of the crank 26, the worm wheel 24 driving the worm 23. The worm 23 rotates the shaft 18, and the shaft 18 causes the fan 22 to rotate in the sleeve 2. In this way, the cold air in the flue, below the register 27, is sucked out as and for the purpose hereinbefore described.
In case the structure is to be used in connection with a vertical register 29 carried by a vertical wall 30, then the base plate 1 is turned up into a vertical position and placed against the register 29, as indicated in Fig. 2. The inner end 32 of the arm 7 far rests on the floor 31, and the end of the support 11 rests on the floor also, There is a distinct advantage in disposing the arm 7 at an acute angle to the axis of rotation of the fan 22 and at acute angle to the plane-defined bytheplate *1, and inhinging the support 11 to the arm 7 as shown at 12. Owing to this construction; the support 11 may be swung inthe direction of tl1e'ar1'o\vs' 'in Fig. 1, thereby to alter the angle between the arm' 7 and the'floor 3'1, and consequently, to alterthe angle between the base late'i and the register 29, when the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 2. Owing-to this construction, the base plate 1 may be made to cooperatc'with the rcgister 29, although the latter does not stand in a truly vertical position.
' Having thus described the invcntiom'what is claimed is 1.111 a device of the class described, a base including a plate and a sleeve carried thereby; a U-shaped frame assembled with the base; afc'a-s'ing carried by the crown of the frame and projecting toward the sleeve; a shaft journaled in the casing; a fan mounted on the shaft and operating within mechanism in the casing for connecting said means with the shaft.

In a device of the class described a frame; a tan carried thereby; frame-carried means for operating the tan; an arm constituting a part of the frame; a support disposed laterally with respect to the arm; and a hinge uniting the support with the arm adjacent the end of the arm, the arm being inclined with respect to the base of the frame.
