UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. OLSON, OF FORT ATKINSON, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF FORT ATKINSON, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
DRINKING-RECEPTACLE FOR CATTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1918.
Application filed June 12, 1916. Serial No. 103,075.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it know that I, JOHN B. OLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Fort Atkinson, county of Jefferson, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improven'ients in Drinking-Re eeptacles for Cattle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of drinking receptacles which are located in or near the manger-s of cattle, and it pertains, more especially, to that class which are provided with automatically closing covers.
Experience has proven that when this class of drinking receptacles are thus equipped with covers cattle frequently throw back such covers, and when, as heretofore constructed such covers drop back upon the receptacle they thereby produce a metallic noise, which is not only confusing but in some instances becomes extremely annoying.
The object of my present invention is to provide a simple and etlicient means for retarding the closing movement of such covers, whereby the noise referred to is prevented.
My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of two of said drinking receptacles in position for use, and
Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of one of said receptacles, the cover of which is provided with a retarding device which causes the same when thrown open to close slowly, whereby the noise of closing as heretofore is avoided.
Like parts are referred to by the same reference numerals in both views.
1 represents a receptacle of ordinary construction and 2 is the cover. The cover 2 is pivotally connected to the receptacle 1 by the hinge members 3, 3. 4 is a retaining bracket which is so located as to contact with the cover when it is thrown back, and serves as a stop to prevent the cover from remaining in its open position, it being understood that when the cover is thrown open it will contact with said bracket 4: and drop to its closed position of its own gravity. The front edge of the cover 2 projects past the front wall of the receptacle 1 as shown at 5, whereby such cover is readily thrown back by the animal preparatory to drinking from said receptacle. The receptacle 1 is provided with a cylinder 6, which cylinder is supported from the receptacle by the bracket 7 and rivet or bolt 8, or in any other convenient manner. The cylinder 6 is socured to the bracket 7 by the bolt 9. 10 is a piston which is loosely fitted to the cylinder 6, and said piston is connected with the cover 2 by a piston rod 11, the upper end of which is pivotally connected to said cover by a lug 12, which lug 12 isprovided with an aperture 13 for the upper end of said piston rod. In view of the fact that the piston 10 is loosely fitted to the cylinder 6 said piston is free to descend therein when the water or other fluid beneath said piston is free to flow up past said piston into the space 14.
It will be understood that when the receptacle 1 is filled with water up to the point indicated by the line 15 the Water will enter said cylinder when it will flow down past the piston 10, whereby the space 16 beneath the piston will be filled with water.
It will now be obvious that when the cover 2 is raised such water as is located above the piston 10 will flow down past the same to the lower end of said cylinder. When, however, the cover is released from the action of the animal and starts to drop back to its closed position its movement is retarded by the action of the water against the lower side of said piston, and said cover 2 can only close as fast as the water beneath the piston passes up between the sides of said piston and its inclosing cylinder, whereby the downward movement of said cover is retarded and the noise heretofore experienced by the closing of the covers is prevented.
I am. aware of the fact that an aperture 17 may, if desired, be formed in said cylinder through which the water will pass slowly as said piston is raised and lowered in said cylinder, in which case a more closely fitting piston may, if desired, he used.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A drinking fountain for animals, comprising the combination of a bowl having a water supply connection, an automatically swinging lid, and means for utilizing the water in the bowl to retard the closing movement of the lid.
water snpp'lyconnection, a hinged lid adapted to be lifted by the nose of theanimah;
and dash pot mechanism within the bowl adapted to utilize the vWater therein to rem tard the closing movement of the lid.
3. The combination set forth in claim 2;
in which the dash pot mechanism includes a piston connected with the lid, and a piston receiving cylinder located within the bowl and. having an aperture near its lower end, adapted to, allow a slow entry andescape-ofi 15 water from. theulo'werj portionfwofithe bowl to the cylinder below the piston.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
