UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
THOMAS M. DEMAREST, OF DUMONT, NEW JERSEY.
PUSH-BUTTON.
Application led .T une 2, 1916.
7 10 all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. DEMA- REST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dumont, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Push-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in push buttons for electric systems and has for its object to produce a device of this character which shall be extremely simple, cheap to manufact-ure, positive in action and wherein the parts are not liable to become disassociated. Y
With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is .a central longitudinal sectional view through a push button constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the button member looking toward the bottom thereof.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the base of insulating material, the same having inturned reduced annular flange provided with peripheral threads to which is threadedly secured the casing 2. The base is provided with spaced contact fingers 3 and 4 which project through the annular flange thereof and these fingers have their outer ends bent in opposite directions, as indicated by the numerals 5. The top or outer portion of the casing 2 is flared inwardly, as at 6, to receive the frusto-conical outer portion 7 of the push button 8. The push button is of insulating material and has its inner face dished, as at 9, and is centrally provided with an integral extending member 10. The end of the member 10 is formed with an arrow head, and on the outer face of this head is arranged a sub# stantially V or arrow-shaped bridging contact 11. The bridging contact 11 has its central portion disposed medially of the eontactfngers 3 and 4 and its angular face disposed opposite the angular ends 5 of the said contact members.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1918.
serial No. 101,346.
The numeral 12 designates a-helical spring which is fitted upon the annular flange or enlargement of the base l and which exerts a pressure. against thc push button to normally force the same toward the outer end of the casing 2. The contact members are provided with the usual wires which are connected with a suitable source of energy and which are also connected to a bell or other device to be operated by the energy to the said wires. While the bridging contact 1 1 has been described and is illustrated as a substantially V-shaped member, it is to be understood that the same may be conical, spherical or any other desired shape to effectively accomplish the purpose for which it is devised.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
' I claim is:
`As an article of manufacture, a push button including a base of insulating materia] having a reduced rounded threaded extension, a metallic casing screwedon the said extension, said casing having its outer end flared inwardly, spaced Contact fingers passing through the center of the" base havin their ends bent at outward angles from eac other, a push button of insulating material in the casing and having a frusto-conical outer end engaging with the flared end of the casing, said button, having its inner face dished and centrally provided with an integrally extending member having an arrow head, a V-shaped bridging contact on said head Vand disposed to engage between the angular ends ofthe contact finger, and a spring in the casing between the base and the button for normally forcing the button outward of the casing to bring the bridging contact thereof away from engagement with the contact ngers.
In testimony whereof I affix lmy signature.
i THOMAS DEMAREST.
