Be it known that we, Monnrs LEON and ALPHA B. VANCE, citizens of the United States, residing at Fort Smith, in the county of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovemen'ts in Display-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention has reference to those display devices that are known as it-stands, which ordinarily include a base, an upright standard, and a substantially horizontal bar or cross-piece at the top of the standard over which articles of fabric maybe draped.

The present invention has particular reference to a holder for supporting more rigid articles such as shoes, boxes, etc, on or independently of such St2LI1ClS,t holder of this general nature being disclosed by our co-pending application for Letters Patent on improvements in display-holders, filed March 11, 1916, Ser. No. 83,524..

It is an obj ect of this invention so to form a holder that it may be placed in any desired position. on the upright standard without removing the cross-piece or other parts of the stand, and be adjusted to and reliably held in different places thereon. Further, the holder is adapted to support canes, umbrellas, and other similar articles, as Well as shoes, boxes, etc. Moreover, it is susceptible of use independently of a stand. When read in connection with the de scription herein, the details of construction and arrangement of parts contemplated by the invention will be apparent from the ac companying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein an embodiment of the invention is disclosed, for purposes of illustration.

Having more particular reference to the drawing, A designates a base, B a standard, and C a cross-piece of a T-stand such as com monly is used for display purposes in stores and elsewhere for display of fabric articles that may be draped over the cross-piece.

Tt frequently is desired to display, in connection with articles that can be draped, others that, because of their character cannot be draped or otherwise conveniently be attached to a 'l-stand of ordinary form, such, for example, as hosiery and shoes, which often are sold together and sometimes are required to match in color, and this invention is designed to meet this demand in a simple and practical manner.

For this purpose, the invention provides a holder that includes a platform 5, which preferably is made of bendable sheet metal, but also may be made of wood or other suitable material. The platform has at its nor mal lower end a flange 6, which maybe formed by bending when pliable material is used for the platform, this flange being for the purpose of retaining articles on the platform when it is in an inclined position, as it ordinarily is when in use. The platform in its upper portion has on each side a hook or other projection 7 adapted to engage a substantially horizontal member such as the cross-pieoe G ofa Tstand, and when the platform is made of pliable material the hooks or projections may be formed by slitting and bending the material.

Near the portion of the platform. that is normally the lower there is hinged on the back thereof an arm 8, having at its free end an identation or seat 9 arranged to engage an upright member such as a standard B of a l stand, so that, when the hooks or pro-- jcctions 7 are in engagement with the crosspiece, the arm will act as a strut to maintain the platform at an inclination.

In order to keep the arm 8 outstanding from the back of the platform, so that it is in position for engagement with a standard or the like, and to keep it from swinging against the platform when the device is used independently of a stand or similar support, a strut 10 is hinged at or near the free end of the arm and is arranged to contact at its free end with the under surface of the platform at a place removed from the connection of the arm and platform, and the free end of the strut may be held in engagement with the platform by a hook or other projection 11, which may be formed by the platform when. desired.

Thus, when it is desired to place the platform on the upright, it is brought to substantially right angles thereto and the upright is passed through the slot to the opening, when the platform assumes an inclined position with respect to the upright and the edges of the openin-g'engage therewith. The slot, therefore, permits the platform to be placed on the standard of a T-stand without removing the cross-piece at the top and also on one that has projections that are impossible or impracticable of removal. In the. particular embodiment shown the lower edge of the slot extends from one of the hooks 7 The'slot-15 may be used not only for the passage of the, upright into and out of the opening 12, but alsoto accommodate a cane, umbrella, or the like, in which case such an article, if necessary to maintain it on theholder, may be made to engagethe hook 7 below the slot.

lVhen the platform is supported by engagement of the edge, of its opening with an upright, the arm 8 and strut ,10 may be folded against its'bottom, if desired, or they maybe leftin extended position, l\ Ioreover, the arm 8 by engagement of its seat 9 with the upright below. the opening may coiiperate in the maintenance of the platform in proper position when the upright extends through the opening, if that is found desirable.

. Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is

A display holder comprising a platform haying in its upper portion an opening,

adapted to accommodate a standard, an arm hinged to=the lower portion 0f the platform and arranged toengagethe standard below the opening ,in'th'e platform, and a strut hinged to said arm at a place removedwfrom the place of connection of the arm and platformand arranged to engage the upper portion of the platform.
