Heretofore service observing circuits have been provided inexchanges where a main and intermediate distributing frame are used. The object of this invention is to pro- 7 vide a service observing circuit adapted to,
be used'in exchanges where only a main distributing frame isavailable. f
In accordance with this invention there is provided a service observing circuit adapted to be connected with the talking conductors of a subscribers line. This circuit is inserted in a subscribers: line circuit at some point intermediate the main distribut-: ing frame and the line jack in which said subscribersline terminates. Included in the observing circuit are a pluralityof indicating devices, one of said devices being adapt ed to beactuated whenever a call is, initiated upon a subscribers line with which said circuit has been associated, and another of said devices being adapted to be actuated whenever a call is received upon said line. .The operation of the apparatus shown in the drawing is as follows: When a subscriber at the substation removes his receiver from the hook, in addition to effecting the energization of the line relay 4: the following circuit is established: source of current 9, winding 10 of relay 1, conductor 11, contact 12, conductor 14:, line wire 2, through the substation and return by way of line wire 1, conductor 15, contacts 16, 17 winding of relay18 to ground. Simultaneously with the completion of this circuit just traced, the through the relay 19: battery 9, coil 10 of relay 4, conductor 11, contact 12, conductor 14, line wire 2, through the substation and back, line wire 1, conductor 20, contact 21, winding 22 0f reconductor lay to ground. In a telephone system, a line circuit eX- tending from a subscribers station to and terminating at a central. ofiice, a line signal for the line, a line relay controlling the line signal, a service observing signal, a first and a second relay controlling the service observing signal, an energizing circuit for the line relay established upon the removal of the receiver from the switchhook and including the winding of the second relay, an energizing circuit for the first relay established upon the removal of the receiver from the switchhook and including a normally closed contact controlled by the second relay, a link circuit for extending the telephone line, and an energizing circuit for the second relay established upon the connection of the link circuit with the telephone line, whereby the normally closed contact is opened.

In a telephone system, a line circuit extending from a subscribers station to and terminating at a central office, a line signal for the line, a line relay controlling the line signal, a service observing signal, a first and a second relay controlling the service observing signal, an energizing circuit for the line relay established upon the removal of the receiver from the switchhook and including the winding of the second relay, an energizing circuit for the first relay established upon the removal of the receiver from the switchhoo'k and including the normally closed contact of the second relay, a link circuit for extending the telephone line, and an energizing circuit for the second relay including contacts of the engaged link and line circuits.
7. In a telephone system, a line circuit extending from a subscribers station to and terminating at a central oflice, a line signal for the line, a line. relay controlling the line signal, a service observing signal, a first re lay connected in series with the line circuit, a second relay connected with the line circuit through a normally closed contact of the first relay and cooperating therewith to control the service observing signal, an energizing circuit for the line relay established upon the removal of the receiver from the switchhook and including the winding of the first relay, an energizing circuit for the second relay established upon the removal of the receiver from the switchhook, a link circuit for extending the telephone line, an energizing circuit for the first relay established upon the connection of the link circuit with the telephone line, a source of ringing current, and a relay responsive to the connection of the ringing current with the telephone line for removing the first relay from the line circuit. a
